How Big is "Big Enough?"

We have had lots of reasons, all of which we have previously debunked, (including the priest shortage lie,*) thrown at us as rationale for the merger/closer of our church. One of them is that, at approximately 250 families, we have no right to exist because we are simply too small a parish to justify.

Partly because my (Julie's) husband is not Catholic, my [largely evangelical protestant] workplace, extended family, and other acquaintances, we happen to know a lot of non-Catholic Christians. We also happen to have fairly frequent houseguests from all over the country because my husband's denomination is so small and geographically disparate, they often travel just to get together or for meetings. Currently we have a twenty-something couple, recently married, staying with us. They are both originally from the midwest but they are currently living in Washington, D.C. They both grew up in protestant churches, she the daughter of a pastor.

When the subject of, "and where do you attend?" comes up, the church closure fiasco inevitably arises. In the past our "priest convener" has said something to the effect of, "what must the protestants think of your not going along with your bishop?" It has always struck me as strange that anyone would think that protestants would not be sympathetic to our plight because they always seem to be. But why are they sympathetic?

Based on my conversations, I would some it up with a couple of pretty simple reasons, really. One, they understand that right is right and wrong is wrong, no matter who happens to espouse the view. Second, in their enthusiasm for growing the church, they understand that closing a church flies in the face of the propagation of the Gospel. Next, they understand that corruption causes more corruption and that it is all too common in all Christian circles for the everyday people in the pew to suffer as a result. But most of all, they are baffled by the following, which is far less abstract, and usually elicit a reply to this effect:

"Two hundred fifty families? That is considered small?" Apparently, by just about any protestant denomination's standards, a congregation anywhere near this size would be considered a great success. Last night was not the first time I have witnessed this reaction. Almost every single time the subject comes up, we are asked how large St. Mary's is. Our houseguest's (the daughter of the pastor) church back in Ohio has "no more than 200 people, probably less," and his in Kansas is even smaller. To have even fifty people in attendance over the course of a weekend would be just great to them. And if you buy into the priest shortage argument is legitimate, you should see the dearth of prospective pastors in their denomination, so this reaction is not due to their great abundance of ministerial candidates. And they should know. He (the one from Kansas) works for one of their denomination's few seminaries.

To top it all off, this apparent preference of so many priests and bishops for "bigger and better" flies in the face of contemporary trends, although they don't seem to recognize that. In their effort to be more protestant and less distinctively Catholic, they are missing the boat entirely. In this day and age of the house church movement, intentionally small Christian churches, and a movement away from the megachurch model, we are witnessng a yearning for the authentic on the part of younger generations in particular and the desire for true community. They also do not seem to be noticing the fact that there are many young protestants who are embracing distinctively Catholic practices without even knowing it,** while so many Catholic leaders seem to want to purge Catholicism of those annoying little things that they think separate us from the protestants.

Meanwhile, our protestant friends are mystified by the desire of someone charged with spreading the gospel to close a church, much less dozens of them. He (the one from Kansas) said, "That is terrible from an evangelism point of view." He took the words right out of my mouth. "Yeah," I said. "One thing I'm pretty sure of is that Christ did not say, "Go, therefore, and consolidate." They laughed and nodded. "My worry," I said, "is that what is currently happening is that so many people are so disgusted with the whole thing that they are leaving not just the Church, but any church, because they figure the gig is up and it's all a bunch of crap. Hundreds of souls will be lost." He nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that's definitely true."

Over a card game last night they asked, "Where would you go?" because they understand how important and irreplaceable a tight knit community is. Without my having to explain anything, they already know that it is not so easy to just jump from one church to another, as if where one worshiped was completely unimportant. (After about a year, they themselves are still looking for a place to worship in the D.C. area and have started a small house church out of their home that meets monthly.) "I don't know what will happen," I answered. "But I do know this. We've got to fight with everything we've got."

Andy Walton, Diocesan spinmaster (spokesman), was quoted in the CP article we linked to yesterday as saying, "the [law] suit was premature because 'no (merger) decree has been issued and there's been no alteration of the parish.'" Well that's an interesting perspective, isn't it? Using this logic, all "core team" meetings and other plans to close, consolidate, and otherwise alter parishes and churches are also premature. Of course, if a decree had been issued, they would argue that if a complaint was to have been registered it should have been raised before the decree was issued. Let's face it. Any parish who sees the writing on the wall needs to act quickly and proactively, not after the ink is dry and the wrecking machines are in place. When wrong is being done, we are obliged to speak out about it. Using Divine law as a guide, all plans to destroy God's churches and, as the current Diocesan administration intends to do, change the Catholic Faith to resemble evangelical protestantism, are always premature since they are entirely unwarranted and wrong. But it doesn't appear the Diocese is using Divine law as its guide, but instead corporate law, or something equally ungodly.
Why the heck do we care about saving St. Mary's?
We've said it before and we'll say it again!


  • Because a church is a sacred, consecrated space. Churches are permanently consecrated. The one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church has always taught this, continues to teach this, and it has been a major point of difference and contention between protestants and Catholics. While mass can be held anywhere, ideally it should not be held just anywhere. That is why Catholics have churches. God deserves reverence and this is why a beautiful and lovingly created church is best suited to His worship in the highest form of prayer, the holy sacrifice of the mass.*

  • Because we love our little community. For goodness sakes, that is reason enough! If "the Church is the people," as is the popular sentiment these days, then it does matter that when I look around the church, I know the people around me. It does matter that I can notice someone has been absent awhile and I can check on them to see if they are ok. If one has not been a member of a true and united community of Faith like this, it may be hard to understand why that community is such a treasure. This treasure should not be needlessly destroyed.

  • Because small is wonderful!

  • Because with the loss of churches come the loss of souls who are not as strong in the Faith or who are disillusioned by the corruption around them. These souls matter to Our Lord and should not be written off as unimportant. We need to try to help them and strengthen them in the Faith. We can only do that if our doors are open and if the churches they know, love, and are familiar with are still there. Because of this, when we close our church's doors, we often close off the last possibility that a soul will return to Holy Mother Church. Those who have already left the Church--and they are many--are no longer around to tell their stories.

  • Because in struggling to hold on to our parish, we are hope and strength and justice to others who are not strong enough to speak up. We have been confirmed in this countless times.

  • Because in the case of St. Mary's, we are truly an "intergenerational" community, which is something the Diocese sorely wants churches to try to be and is trying to implement in its "lifelong faith formation" program. We already are, so why destroy it only to try to rebuild something that approximates it?

  • Because while we are happy to do things with others, a parish has a right to existence as stipulated by canon law. Wanting one's parish to remain as it is does not make one an "isolationist." It makes one content.

  • Because our forefathers and mothers worked hard and sacrificed to give us the great gift of St. Mary's and we do not take this gift for granted.

  • Because the church belongs to the people of the parish. They built and maintain it and it belongs to them.

  • Because St. Mary's has been financially solvent and debt-free since 1922 and there is no reason it cannot continue to be. St. Mary's parishioners have always been very generous in donating, fundraising, and contributing their time and efforts to directly maintaining the parish. This is part of our culture.

  • Because we are obligated, by virtue of our baptism and confirmation, to defend the church from error and attack, both from within and without. See Pope St. Pius X's encyclical against the modernists for more on this. It is not just St. Mary's and other churches that are under attack here, but the Faith itself. Purporting that our churches are "just buildings" is example enough. Look at the bishop's job positions, which include audio visual technicians whose job is to install and maintain screens and sound systems, as well as the inclusion of rock bands during mass. Visit any number of "modern" catholic churches which have had their tabernacles removed from a place of prominence on the altar. Look at how many times Bishop Galante has held up Gloucester County Community Church, an evangelical protestant church, as an example to be striven towards. We could go on. Which leads to the following point...

  • Because we want to remain Catholic, and that includes holding on to our traditional churches.  

  • Because St. Mary's has had and continues to have wonderful devotions available to all, including Eucharistic Adoration from Wed. morning through Friday evening every week. This is something not found at every parish.

  • Because our CCD program is small, personal, affordable, our kids love it, and it is worth saving.

  • Because we should not have to defend our right to exist, and no parish should.

  • Because there has never been a saint who became holy by closing churches, only saints who became holy by erecting them.

  • Because many priests, bishops, and even popes have been wrong in the history of the Church. We have an obligation to defend Her. Many saints have been redeemed in time. Saints Catherine of Siena, Joan of Arc, Teresa of Avila, Thomas More, and John Fisher (the only bishop to defend the Faith against evil Henry VIII), ora pro nobis!

  • Because keeping open or closing a parish is not a "managerial" decision. Our Church is not a corporation and should not be run like one.

  • Because we must obey Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the teachings of His Church first and foremost, not men.

For all these reasons and more, we will defend our church and our Faith.

That the church is "just a building" is a protestant view, not a Catholic one. Now this heterodox view is expediently and shamefully used by the very men charged with defending our Faith and our churches and because they are in positions of authority, people trust them, listen, and believe them.
Cleary's Notebook/Gloucester City News continues to follow the church closing debacle in their "Part 3" of a three-part series.  Most of the interviews were completed last winter, but not too much has changed since then.  Paula Carlton is an excellent writer and journalist and has done extremely thorough research for all three parts of the article. Thank you, Paula, Gloucester City News, and Cleary's Notebook.

Overall the piece is certainly well done, although there are some very insignificant inaccuracies. For example, though Julie's non-Catholic husband ("Kelley") does certainly have views on the situation, he does not write articles (or poems for that matter) for the Save St. Mary's website. Occasionally he has been so disgusted with outright lies of the Diocesan Administration that he's written pieces for his own personal blog, which are then linked to by SSM. This is, of course, ironic since people like him are who Galante is supposedly trying to reach but who he is instead alienating. Sadly, Bishop Galante has also succeeded in alienating young families, older Catholics, and, well, most people in between so far as we can tell. Strangely, all those who we knew who would have considered the possibility of coming into the Faith have put the possibility completely out of their minds because of what they are currently seeing.

The bottom line is that anyone who thinks the forced closure of parishes, outright lies, hireling "ministers," corporate slickness, and evangelical protestant-style megachurches are going to attract people to the Faith, they are deluding themselves. What's really going on here, so far as we can tell is [a] a moneygrab and [b] a forcing down the throats of the faithful an agenda to radically change the church from within. Yeah, there are unfortunately some aging liberals in high places want to see the "quatholic" church of their dreams come to life before they leave this earth. But to what end?

In any case, we highly encourage you to read this latest installment of Ms. Carlson's since it is such a good synopsis of what's happened thus far. Link: click here. The article is entitled, "The Worldwide Catholic Church is Going Through Changes" and it is dated Nov. 13, 2009. Here are a couple small snippets from the article:

[1] Kelley wrote, "Twas the Night Before Merger," which Heiland posted in a Jan. 7 blog on SSMM. It stated, in part: "Twas the Night Before Merger, when all through the church [appeared] lists of new ministries for all the search"; "Wawas with crosses [that] point up to the sky"; and "Coffee mugs... hung by the cappuccino bar with care, in the hopes that the barrista soon would there."

"Wawaization" is some-thing many protesters fear most from the reconfiguration of parishes and worship sites in the Camden Diocese.

However, according to Kelley, in a May 31, 2008 blog: "The bishop (Bishop Joseph Galante) gave the church-saving movement its best metaphor when he disparaged the little churches he wants to shutter as 'Wawa churches.' The bishop might as well condemn motherhood, baseball and apple pie if he's going to take on South Jersey's Wawa. One disgruntled 'Catholic in name only' rose to reclaim the Wawa label, saying that all these little churches were indeed like Wawa: ubiquitous, open at all hours, with good food that brought people in."

[2] [Said John Sendman of St. Jude's in Blackwood:] "There are a lot of people who are going to leave the church on account of this," he said. "The people I know believe in a small church with a group of people who know each other and pray together.

[3]"The thing that is interesting," Pierzynski [of St. Vincent Pallotti, Haddon Heights] said, "is that most rec-ommendations were to cluster parishes, which means that all parishes remain open, but share a priest. Mergers mean more parishes and properties are available to sell. The other priests may be asked to retire, or will be reassigned. It doesn't vary too much between the mergers and the clusters.

"[The diocese] quickly changed that and said that [the priest shortage] wasn't the reason for the mergers. Then [the diocese] cited vibrancy. But parishioners have stopped giving [donations], and now they've cited financial reasons. That's a situation they themselves created. By closing and merging parishes, you create a priest overage. "It's funny to watch them spin it around to what they need it to be," he said.

You may read the entire article here, but we will be quoting from sections of this interesting essay, The American Church, Is it Here?, in anticipation of our look at Pope Saint Pius X's 1906 encyclical against the modernists entitled, Pascendi Dominici Gregis. The aforementioned article (and perhaps the encyclical, too!) may be perceived by some as radical, but the author's points are well made and ring startlingly familiar. It looks as if the original article was written in 1983.

Within his essay, author Michael Davies summarizes a 1981 article in the Homiletic and Pastoral Review. This article was written by an anonymous priest and discusses "the plight of the papist priest;" that is, the priest who is obedient to the pope and the magisterium (holy teaching authority) of the Church. Sadly, twenty-eight years later, you may find yourself recognizing many of these conditions as unfortunately present here in the American Catholic church. (However, it should be noted that under Pope Benedict XVI there is greater hope.)

1) Many American dioceses are ruled by bishops who are either Modernists or who submit to Modernist control of their diocese;

2) Modernists have a "lock-tight" control of the diocesan bureaucracy;

3) Priests who are loyal to the Pope have been reduced to a minority of one-eighth of the diocesan clergy;

4) These priests are isolated, ridiculed and have no hope of advancement;

5) Most seminaries are totally Modernist, and the students who are ordained from them are totally-programmed Modernists;

6) Modernist influence is particularly dominant in the fields of liturgy, catechetics, and the diocesan press;

7) The situation is certain to worsen;

8) Many American dioceses are already totally alienated from the Holy See;

9) Given the present process of consultation prior to episcopal appointments, there is no prospect of orthodox priests being promoted to the episcopate.

Further, the author Davies quotes states the following:

About half the clergy comprise the swing area: a vast mushy no-man's land where the priests will flip-flop wherever and whenever convenience dictates. At present this means conforming to the radical Modernist leadership. For some of these men, a nostalgia for Rome surfaces now and then, but is quickly submerged. Theirs is the tired refrain: "But this is what the bishop wants, and we took a vow of obedience to our bishop."
Therefore what we really have is disobedience to tradition, disobedience to clear Catholic Church teaching, and in its place a false obedience to sadly misled bishops who in turn mislead the faithful with the cooperation of their priests.

In our particular case, we have the lowering in status of our churches to "just buildings," as easily dispensable as old candy wrappers. In their stead, we face the prospect of what we already see in existence throughout our own and other dioceses: new, modern[ist] structures that are antiseptic, cold, round or semi-circular so as to promote the elevation of "community" above all things.* Said structures are typically lacking in ornamentation worthy of God, but replete with CatholicChurchSupply.com type furnishings. Such generic "auditorium"-like sanctuaries are often without statues and side altars, absent truly beautiful teaching art, yet manage to find space for the addition of un-catholic devices such as audio visual equipment and plenty of room beside the altar for rock bands and grand pianos. Worst of all is the removal Our Lord and Savior in the tabernacle to a side altar, separate chapel, or God knows where.

We know from historical precedent that the first thing "reformers" do is to destroy church architecture and furnishings. They destroy art and statuary, they desecrate holy things, they even torch buildings. All this and more has been done, and always in the name of progress, of Reformation. They know, perhaps intuitively, that the easiest way to change people's religion and how they worship is to change where they worship.

Yes, these structures are more recognizably non-denominational protestant in character than Catholic. And when we change church architecture so dramatically, we change the focus of the mass and the focus of our prayer, not to mention Catholic tradition and identity generally. When we change the focus of the mass, we succeed in changing the mass and, consequently, our very Faith.
*We shall see that Pope St. Pius X addresses this at length in his Encyclical on the Doctrine of the Modernists.

I admit that watching the show, "Little House on the Prairie" is one of my guilty pleasures. I've liked this show ever since I was a small child. While traveling across the country once, I accidentally (but happily) found myself following the same trail that the real Ingalls family once followed and visited one of the museums associated with the famous pioneer family. Now my husband and I are reading the book series aloud to our children, and this nicely coincides with a homeschooler class my son is taking entitled, "Westward Ho."

In any case, I think that one of the central attractive qualities of this series is the real life struggle between good and evil. While members of the Ingalls family do not always make the right choices initially, with the help of God and by strengthening each other, in the end they always chooses the side of right.

I was reading a quote from one of the writers of the show the other day. He was commenting on the episode, "The Bully Boys" (see last few minutes of episode and transcription below). In this episode a group of thugs threaten the way of life of the entire town. By the end of the episode, virtually the entire town has been abused in some way. The writer states that what makes this episode different from many is the fact that it is acknowledged that some people are essentially bad. The soft-spoken and Christ-like Reverend Alden sums up the sentiments of the writer in his sermon, which precipitates the driving of the thugs from the community.

The reason why I am bothering to share this with you is that I think we face a similar situation on a much broader scale here in our diocese. While some bullies stand outside a church or community, some appear to be a part of it. They wield their membership and, in some cases, their authority in abusive ways. They lie, threaten others, and may even steal what does not belong to them.

Unlike the villains in this Little House episode, there are some in leadership positions in our diocese and throughout the Church who are basically just thugs and bullies. Like the tv show bullies, they think nothing of pushing people and communities around. The common street criminals, the thieving corporate CEOs, the scheming Washington politicians, and certain corrupt Church officials have one thing in common: they are out for only themselves and do not consider the wellbeing and rights of others, much less the propagation of the Faith and the Gospel. They are career-oriented opportunists. Therefore it is imperative that we pray daily not only for ourselves and our parishes, but for the conversion of all Church leaders to Christ and His Church.

In a simple and straightforward way, this episode manages to relay a few very important truths:

1. Contrary to the modern world's popular opinion, good and evil exist. Good and evil are not subjectively determined. They are not matters of perception, but are objectively true.

2. In all of our lives, we have a choice to make. We must daily choose between good and evil, right and wrong, Jesus Christ and The Deceiver. Every day when we wake up in the morning, this is the choice that is before us. We must choose our side. This is called free will. However, we cannot be on the side of both Christ and The Evil One simultaneously. When we fall, when we have made a wrong decision and sinned, we confess it, we disown it, and we choose Christ's side again.

3. "Turning the other cheek" is indeed noble, but as demonstrated by Our Lord, does not automatically exclude the necessity of resisting the devil and "those who do his bidding."

4. A real community does not "stand alone against those who do the devil's work," but is unified by God in its insistence that evil be thwarted and right defended.*
Though the show depicts a protestant congregation, I think a valid fifth point may also be taken:

5. A pastor has an obligation to defend his flock from those who mean to harm it, from the attacks of the devil.

Rev. Alden: With your indulgence I would like to dispense with the hymn and go directly to my subject this morning: Heaven and hell. Sometimes we forget, in our contemplation of our reward in Heaven, that there even is a hell. But we might do well this morning to remember that hell has a purpose too. And the devil doesn't sit down there all by himself. Now I've told you that there's good in all people. But that doesn't mean that all people lead good lives. There are those who lie, who steal, who abuse those around them. Last week I told you that it was noble and courageous to turn the other cheek. Well, that's true, but this week one of you reminded me that there are times that the devil is in our midst; that no endurance, no nobility, will defend us against those who do his bidding.

Thug #1: Reverend, all that talk about the devil, you wouldn't be slurring me and my brothers, would ya?

Rev. Alden: More than that. It's strange that it took the children in this town to teach us the lesson: that we are a town, we're a community, we're a congregation. And no man should stand alone against those who do the devil's work.

Thug #2: What are you planning to do, preacher?

Rev. Alden: I intend to see you out of this church and out of this community.

Thug #2: Well that's pretty hard words but it looks like you're still standing pretty much alone.

Thug #2: All right, all right, we'll be out of here by nightfall.

Rev. Alden: You'll go NOW. And you'll take only those things you brought with you. And maybe next time you'll think twice about taking advantage of good, decent people.

Catholic theology and Church teaching are not accidental. Holy Mother Church teaches unchanging, eternal Truths. Moreover, these Truths are all connected and interconnected. Like all systems, each Truth depends upon the other; they are the structures that support the building. We do not, after all, have an atomistic system wherein one truth may stand up as a pillar without the others. Generally speaking, it is not possible, nor is it logical, to accept one teaching of the Catholic Church and dispense with the others, as if one was unrelated to the next. Once we begin to do this, the structure loses its supports and comes tumbling down.

Take, for example, our church buildings and chapels. They are designed for the worship of Christ, the King of the Universe. They are supposed to give us a glimpse of heaven. They are to surround us with examples of how we should live (depictions of the lives of Christ and the saints), who we are and were designed to be (holy sons and daughters of Our Lord), and the physical and spiritual means of getting there.

As Catholics, we believe that Christ is truly and physically present in the Holy Sacrifice of the Altar and that his Eucharistic Presence resides in the Tabernacle. If the King of the Universe resides in the Tabernacle, it only makes sense that that Tabernacle be located in a prominent place, front and center.

If the King of the Universe in the Tabernacle is located front and center in our churches, it only makes sense that we reverently face Him. If the King of the Universe is located in the Tabernacle, front and center, and we are all facing His Majesty, it only makes sense that we be able to kneel before Him in humility and out of love and devotion to Him.

If we truly believe that Jesus Christ, King and Redeemer of our fallen race has come to be with us sacramentally in the Holy Eucharist and that He resides in our Catholic churches, then our souls and minds ought to be elevated, our whole selves reminded of Him while we are in church, whether mass is going on or not. Throughout most of human history, people have not been literate, and even today we need reminders of what it means to live the Christian life. God allows us to use our senses to know Him. To glorify God and for the help of our souls, we are given works of art in the form of paintings, stained glass windows, statues, and other things within our churches.

Consider this. When you have a guest coming to your house, you clean up. You make ready. You prepare. If you were to have an "important" guest come to your house, you would want it to look good. In this case we have an important guest--the most important Guest possible, our Creator--coming to be with us, so great is His love for us. We should want all around us to remind us of His loving and sacrificial Presence.

Says the Catholic Church of England and Wales:

A Church for us is more than a building - it is a Sacred Space, filled with God's presence. Everything within that space - the paintings, the statues, the stained glass - exists for a spiritual purpose.

This is to provide people with a focus for prayer and an insight into God: literally a 'glimpse of heaven'. The word 'Patrimony' describes the Church's cultural inheritance in terms of architecture, art and artefacts. All witness to our Catholic past: a history of persecution, struggle and ultimately, revival. We are just custodians, with a duty to preserve these sacred treasures for the future. Today we also create the Patrimony of tomorrow by commissioning high quality Sacred art.

But now, after roughly two thousand years of Holy Mother Church teaching us
  • about the sacredness the church building,
  • about how we must be ever vigilant of the possibility of sacrilege not only personally but also in our churches and shrines,
  • about how Our Lord would be with us even until the end of time both spiritually and in the Holy Eucharist in our churches and sacred places,
  • about Christians sacrificing all they had materially and even their own lives for the sake of their holy churches erection and continuation,
  • to fall on our knees before God in our beloved churches,
now, in late twentieth and early twenty-first century America we are told to believe that our churches are "just buildings" and we ought not be attached to them. I don't know about you, but my mother taught me when I was just a child that this is one of the most important things that distinguishes us as Catholics from the protestants: our churches are open because we believe that they are holy places, that Our Lord is there, and that they are not just buildings. My mother was no liar.

Places where Our Lord has come to us sacramentally in His unbloody sacrifice, day after day after day, we are now told to believe are buildings like any other. That isn't Catholicism. That is materialism. And that, my friends, is precisely what the devil himself would have us believe. To believe our churches are only buildings would be to deny Our Lord's Eucharistic Presence, our ultimate and eternal destiny, and that for which we were created--the worship of God. In fact, to claim that our churches are just buildings would be to deny our spiritual nature, the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, and even our sacred baptisms and confirmations. To claim that our churches are just buildings is to deny the validity of their consecrations and blessings. To claim that our churches are just buildings is an insidious lie. And a lie is a lie no matter who says it.

By a decree of the Council of Trent (Sess. XXII), Mass should not be celebrated in any place except a consecrated or blessed church. Hence it is the wish of the Church that at least cathedrals and parish churches be solemnly consecrated, and that smaller churches be blessed (Cong. Sac. Rit., 7 Aug., 1875), but any church and public or semi-public oratory may be consecrated (Cong. Sac. Rit., 5 June, 1899). Both by consecration and by blessing a church is dedicated to Divine worship, which forbids its use for common or profane purposes. Consecration is a rite reserved to a bishop, who by the solemn anointing with holy chrism, and in the prescribed form, dedicates a building to the service of God, thereby raising it in perpetuum to a higher order, removing it from the malign influence of Satan, and rendering it a place in which favours are more graciously granted by God (Pontificale Romanum).  (From New Advent, the Catholic Encyclopedia.)

In the past, Catholics and Catholic buildings alike have been the targets of hatred and persecution. I need not list the litany of specific examples, but priests have been tarred and feathered, buildings blown up, altars desecrated, the Sacred Body of Our Lord maligned, churches vandalized. The history of anti-Catholicism in this country is well-documented and is, in fact, alive and well today. Of course in this country Catholics not even permitted to run for public office (and even when they were, there was serious doubt about their "patriotism"). Catholics have experienced horrible persecution in this and other countries, and by extension our houses of worship desecrated in the worst possible ways. Suffice it to say that many of you have likely heard the stories of your own ancestors and what they went through to preserve the faith, or even just to get to mass. I know I grew up hearing these stories of perseverance in the Faith, and my own family sacrificed much and for that I am so proud and so grateful. It is a great privilege to be born into a good Catholic family and to receive the benefits of our patrimony. The fruit of all that sacrifice is made real to us by virtue of worshiping in the places bequeathed to us by our ancestors and by the grace of God.

unique in the sense that just about everything in (and out of) the church
was and is bought, paid for, and maintained by members over the years.

It is amazing that at this point in American Catholic history, instead of the Catholic Church being the object of hostile attacks from without, our church buildings and even the Church itself is being attacked from within. Sadly, our shepherds are leading their sheep astray, and many souls will be lost. Instead of protecting our churches, our patrimony, they are being closed (and often the contents sold on ebay) and when faithful Catholics hold tight to the timeless teachings of their Faith, they are called all manner of things from "disobedient" to "unchristian" and worse. Sometimes these attacks are leveled, shamefully, by their own priests and bishops. Yes, many of the very bishops who

  • harbored child abusers, shuffling them from one parish to the next
  • affiliate themselves and do business with the likes of criminals who would steal churches and schools right out from under unsuspecting Catholics
  • allow the rampant sexual impropriety of priests in their diocese
  • advocate such unorthodox doctrine as married, gay, and "womyn" priests; as well as downplay of the sacrificial nature of the mass and many other things
  • repeatedly lie to the faithful in matters ranging from real estate transactions to canon law to theological Truth
  • justify closing churches by claiming there's a "priest shortage" and then persecuting and sending away priests by the dozen...
...yes, some of the very same bishops would be so blind and arrogant as to criticize the faithful Catholics who merely want to worship their Lord and Savior in the manner they always have: in their own churches. This is an outrage, and it should not be tolerated by any thinking Catholic.

This is just one example of what we have to look forward to if the
likes of Bishop Galante and Marilyn Vollmer get their way. The
"priest shortage" red herring has been used as an excuse to
justify all manner of practices, from church closures to major
church, umm, "redecorations." I suppose in this day and age
this church could be considered "fortunate" to have survived
at all and to have a statue of our Blessed Mother still within it.

Sadly, it doesn't seem that they kneel anymore, but I
bet they hold hands a lot.

He gave His All for us, so great was His love! He even gave us His very own
perfect Mother to be our Mother, too! Do we pack it in now, or do we continue to live that sacrifice in our own lives? Our Lord gave us our churches. He gave them to us for a very good reason: so that we could worship Him! He entrusted them to us that we may be good stewards of his holy Houses. We are called to lives of grace and sanctity, and we are called to defend the Faith by virtue of our baptism. We are to defend the Faith from all who attack it, whether the attackers be outside the Church or within it. Remember, St. John Bosco assures us that when the Church is battered by enemies from within or from without, salvation can only come from JESUS IN THE EUCHARIST; MARY, THE HELP OF CHRISTIANS; and THE POPE, the vicar of Christ on earth.

Catholic Movie Recommendation

I admit that I've had the movie, Molokai: The Story of Father Damien, sitting around at home for months. MolokaiMovieI rented it from Netflix. It's a gorgeous movie with a star-studded cast, the acting superb, the cinematography wonderful, period clothing impeccable, script well-written, the events historically accurate. There's not a thing wrong with this movie. The problem? The subject matter.

Fr. Damien, who I just discovered was canonized less than two weeks ago by our holy pontiff (YES!!!!), was a Belgian Sacred Heart priest who worked among the lepers on the island of Molokai in Hawaii during the mid to late 1800s. When considering the topic of leper colonies--something I never thought much about, to be honest--it simply never occurred to me that children found to have the disease would be forcibly separated from their parents, wives from husbands, and so forth, never to be seen again. To be shipped off to Molokai was itself like death.

They were treated more like criminals than innocent victims of disease. The infected were hunted out, often by police and officials, and put into forced segregation. Torn from family and friends and lost in the grim strokes of despair and death, the unwanted existed in their damp seclusion....most of the patients' ceilings were only the canopy of the sky.*

To witness this barbarism even in movie form was simply heart wrenching. That's why it took so long to finish the movie.

Another effect of exile I had never considered was that of vice. Apparently, faced with one's inevitable demise and death, and lacking the mores and expectations of a larger society, many felt they had nothing to lose in debauchery. Fr. Damien, who volunteered and was not sent to live among the lepers, had all these difficulties to face and more. The only priest on the island, and disallowed to leave, he was not permitted to go to confession for long periods of time. Refused permission to board a steamliner with a priest (Fr. Modeste) aboard, andDamien the ship not allowed to dock on Molokai, Fr. Damien was forced to make his confession while screaming from a rowboat. (This true event is portrayed in the movie.)

Though he repeatedly requested and prayed for not only a priest to come hear his confession, but also material and human aid for the more than a thousand sick and dying people on Molokai, he was refused time and again by his bishop and superiors. Although there were nuns and others willing to come help, they were refused admittance to the leper colony by the bishop and Board of Health, and money and materials were withheld from the saint and needy lepers. He had no doctors, no nurses.

Additionally, the protestants on the Board of Health had a hand in forcing Fr. Damien to remain on the island, supposedly for fear of spreading the disease. They thought that "by forcing him to stay he would leave  the settlement altogether. Jealousy had prompted them to destroy a hope that they would not fulfill themselves."**

Because Fr. Damien had no doctors or nurses, grave diggers, construction workers, maintenance men, farmers, teachers, and children were without parents, he became all these things. "Everyone looks on me as a father. As for me I make myself a leper with the lepers to gain all to Jesus Christ," the great saint said. His sermons began, "We lepers."

As if all this was not enough, he also established sodalities, a brass band, trained interested people in church music, evangelized voraciously the many non-Catholics (he baptized over a thousand people), administered the sacraments, established perpetual adoration, and built orphanages. Needless to say his favorite saint was the great missionary Francis Xavier.

Despite Fr. Damien's tireless efforts, his bishop said this, "I regret that the admiration for this work of charity is erroneous. I see with displeasure that the newspapers who admire you exaggerate by putting things in a false light."*** Both his provincial superior and his bishop were not only discouraging, they treated him horribly and undermined his efforts to do the Lord's work among people who needed so much help. Finally his superior, Fr. Leonor (depicted in the movie by Derek Jacobi) admitted that the bishop was "suffering from the disease of jealousy. Public esteem for anyone other than himself is his torment." The bishop did not wish donations to be given to Fr. Damien on Molokai but all to be lavished instead on him. Again we see how greed undermines God's will. But the provincial superior, Fr. Leonor, was no better. In fact as time went on the Board of Health relaxed somewhat in restricting Fr. Damien's movements, but Fr. Leonor continued to restrict him and severely limited his ability to go to confession.

Finally Fr. Damien contracted leprosy, a natural result of his coming into direct contact with the disease for so long. Adding insult to injury, he was accused of "impious activity," shall we say, in contracting the disease. This was completely without foundation, meant only to drag down his reputation.

It seems Fr. Leonor treated Fr. Damien with disdain until the great saint's death.DamienDeathbed2 As Fr. Damien lay dying (left), Leonor even refused to send him a crucifix for the leper's chapel. It is unfortunate that throughout Catholic history, despite physical and spiritual need, there have been too many bishops and prelates who care little for the salvation of souls. We need only read the lives of countless saints to see how many struggled with their superiors and bishops. We find ourselves living in another of these eras in which material and corporate logic trumps spiritual need, an era in which not only are we being deprived a crucifix but our entire churches are being stolen away. May the good Lord bless his very many faithful servants throughout our blessed Church's history. And may Fr. Damien, saint of the lepers, faithful despite all opposition, pray for all of us.

Thankfully by the time of his death he received some human assistance and increased supplies, and his reputation has of course been vindicated. The great saint was only 49 at the time of his death.

No description on my part could ever do St. Damien of Molokai or the movie justice. I highly recommend renting or buying the movie. Also, supplement your viewing by obtaining for $2 the From the Housetops periodical (link below) with a succinct but ample biography of this great new saint of the Church. He is yet another saint who, in the face of persecution from both his immediate superior and bishop, was able to build chapels, spread the Faith, and act as a true father as shepherd of all to a people without hope.

A friend of mine who's my age (early 30s) recently moved with her husband and little daughter to a new town in a nearby state. They were over our house yesterday. In her words, she wanted to start "living right." She wanted to have her house blessed, begin going to church again, and have her daughter baptized. She also hoped to have her daughter attend the local Catholic preschool. She went to the church hoping to schedule a date to have her house blessed. When the priest opened the door, before she even had the chance to introduce herself or tell him why she had come, he said to her, "I can't help you financially" and closed the door.

Needless to say, my friend was devastated. Here was a woman who has not had the easiest time of it in life. She once was very devout. She had fallen away from the faith for awhile and wanted to start over, so to speak. I don't think she was expecting much from the priest at this church, but she did not expect to be treated so rudely. It occurred to me that even if she had been a "vagrant" looking for a handout, what harm would it have done this man to say, "I'm sorry that I can't help you out right now, but please allow me to give you a blessing?" Is it to be assumed that any youngish person who comes to a Catholic church in the middle of the day is just looking for a handout? Anyway, she's so upset. And this happened months ago.

I feel terrible for her. But worse, I don't know what to say to her. I have no practical advice for her. The most I could come up with was something along the lines of, "Hey, at least it ain't 16th century England. Much worse has happened in the history of the church. This is small potatoes in the vast scheme of things," to which she responded, "It still sucks. It still makes me feel nauseous." And you know what? She's absolutely right. It might not be the worst thing that's ever happened in the history of the world, but it still feels like crap.

I hope this was just a case of someone waking up on the wrong side of the bed. But whatever it was, if a man of God, a priest of Christ, can treat someone he's never met so horribly, what does that say about his Faith, about THE Faith? We cannot afford to make these kinds of mistakes.

For those of us "on the inside," who are able to persevere in the Faith by the grace of God, it may seem silly to consider that such an interaction could so upset a person. But it does. It's only natural.

She's not so strong in her faith, but she wanted to grow in it. She is hurt, and she is very, very angry. Now she and her family are considering attending a church of a protestant denomination, but she said, "I don't want to go there. I want to be Catholic." But she's so hurt and conflicted she doesn't know what to do. She does seem to know she needs God and needs a community of faith to help her know Him. We are all made to know God, but if she can't even get in the door of the church, she's got to go somewhere.

So it seemed ironic when I read the pastor's column in the St. Mary's bulletin today. Fr. Namiotka wrote about the importance of community:

So when people tell you that they can "pray alone without a church" remind them that they are meant to be a part of something much bigger than themselves. Jesus didn't mean for us to go it alone. He established the Church for us. We are called to be a part of it. The priest is meant to be there for his people and the people are supposed to support their priest(s).
Our pastor is, of course, absolutely right. Fr. Namiotka goes on to encourage us to invite people to attend mass with us. And I did this yesterday with my friend, but St. Mary's is special, our pastor is (thank God) orthodox, and the people kind and friendly. Not all Catholic churches are like St. Mary's, and besides, she doesn't live nearby.

Well, I would like to say that this experience is merely an isolated incident. However in the course of the past year and a half I have heard way too many stories like this to count. Lately I think I'm averaging one a week. I heard another one only this past Thursday about a parish (actually several parishes that are supposedly merging into one massive church) in our own diocese. A mother in this parish had worked very hard to establish a youth group intended for high school age kids, only to suddenly lose the support of the pastor. He had, apparently, decided that this youth group was "not necessary" and that instead he would like to establish a youth group for the younger children, six and up. She was mystified, frustrated, and said she wouldn't be volunteering her help anytime again real soon. To add insult to injury, this capable mother and college graduate was told that they needed to find "qualified" people to teach CCD and head up such groups...certified school teachers and persons with advanced degrees. Uh-huh.

I do not want to perpetuate any stereotypes about young adults or young families as religiously indifferent, because I believe this is far from the truth. In case you wonder why there aren't more young adults and young families in your parish, though, let me assure you, this kind of stuff is why. I'm not saying every younger adult has had a "run-in" with a priest or an "incident" at their parish. Not at all. But what I am saying is that people want to be treated decently. If they can't even get in the door, there's not much chance they're going to keep coming back.

Further, if we don't start supporting people's efforts to help young adults, kids, and all Catholics to grow closer to the Lord in the context of their own parishes, the fall-off is going to continue. Frankly, we ought to be nothing short of amazed to witness any religious and priestly vocations at all.

Finally I'd like to mention something I've noticed about my generation. It's been my observation (and I know I'm not alone in this) that my generation, for whatever reason, has a desire for the authentic and a general distaste for the hypocritical. If they catch a whiff of hypocrisy, they're outta there. Maybe it's because they are a generation that grew up in broken families and divorce, who knows? We can leave that to the sociologists. But whatever the reason, they are realists. They want to live their lives authentically--in whatever way that may be to them. They dislike people and organizations, be they religious or secular, that say one thing and do another. This is why--at least in part--we see such personal devastation when someone representing the church behaves so badly. It stinks of both inauthenticity and hypocrisy. It's just yucky. So I think the resistance of younger people to institutional religion, as they may see it, is not accidental. It is not intellectual or religious laziness. It is deliberate, and it is often well thought out. They have their reasons. And yes, sometimes they are understandable. After all, what good is a religion that turns us into mean people, liars, or worse, totally corrupt people?

So let's all try to remember that, whether we're lay or religious or priest, we all represent the Church. People will enter its doors based--at least in part--on how we treat them and how we live our lives. If we want people to come into the Church, we have to act like people matter.

Update: We have been informed that the church in question is the new Assumption Church in Galloway Township. How sad. You'll notice on the website that the exterior of the facility isn't so bad, but the inside is pretty sparse. I've been to the old Assumption Church and school, which is sitting on prime real estate in Pomona (and presumably why the new one is not located there) since I grew up not too far from there. It wasn't the most beautiful church in the world, nor was it the first one in that location. However it at least looked "Catholic" and was not a generic auditorium. If you're nervous about what your new McChurch would look like, just take a gander at the newest churches in the Diocese to get an idea.

Here are a couple of snippets of the comments sent to savestmarys in response:

  • It looks like an evangelical, non-denominational Protestant place of worship. it reminds me of the River of Life Church in Cherry Hill, which is the church that my son's friend attend. On the outside, it does not look like a warehouse. The service begins with music which is scrolled on a screen in front of the church.
  • I don't know where this church is; not familiar as one I have been to recently but it sure looks like a Catholic Charismatic Conference thing to me.  The Charismatic Ministry was once called Hearts Afire and Let the Fire Fall when it was so active in Steubenville, Ohio. That was in the 80's.The people from Steubenville used to travel around doing special presentations, especially around Pentecost. I can remember  being at masses where people sang like that and were "on fire" with the spirit.  People spoke in tongues and rested in the spirit...The altar is visible in one picture but it does seem diminished; does this happen every week at this church supposedly? We were to a church in Colorado where they had the big screens like this; it was so people could know the prayers being said we were told.  In some areas where there are great singers and musicians who volunteer their talents , I could see this happening.  The people seem middle aged and the right age to have been "charismatic Catholics" back in the day. Just an opinion.
In response to the Bishop of Scranton being removed, we received emails to this effect. Here is one of them:

We couldn't find any details, so does anyone know where in the diocese this mystery church is located? Click HERE for pictures. It is something called the "Hearts of Fire Ministry" and it appears very...not Catholic. The church looks like an auditorium, complete with sound system and giant screens. It very much resembles, truth be told, Gloucester County Community Church and other protestant megachurches we've seen, aside from the crucifix. You can't even see the altar since the giant praise choir must be covering it up with their backs. Tabernacle? Who knows. Morbid curiosity causes us to inquire.
Here's a letter to the editor from Diocese of Camden spinmaster, Andy Walton. Don't laugh right away, read it first.

Re: "Do not care" (letters, Aug. 27).
The letter writer from Magnolia,St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church whose struggling parish is merging with two nearby parishes, suggested that Bishop Joseph Galante, his priest advisers, deanery planning teams, planning commission and Core Teams "do not care" about the pain being felt by parishioners when their parishes merge.

The feelings of loss that accompany change of this kind are not being ignored. In fact, unlike other dioceses that have moved far more quickly with parish reconfigurations, the bishop insisted there be a period of 12 to 24 months before he issued decrees formally establishing new parishes. He did this in recognition of the sense of loss he knew would be experienced and to give parishes adequate time to prepare to come together.

During this time, he has heard personally from parishioners in every part of the diocese and has acknowledged the disappointment many naturally feel. The fact is, if he didn't care, he would not be taking steps to address the needs of Catholics in South Jersey. If he didn't care, he wouldn't be working to reverse downward trends in religious practice.

The fact is, it is precisely because the bishop cares so deeply about the well-being of parishioners and because of his great love for the Church and the people of South Jersey that he has undertaken the effort now under way to strengthen parishes and improve care to the people.

St. Gregory's:
Andy's talking about the beautiful St. Gregory's (above) in Magnolia. Galante, McGrath, and Walton "care" so much they seem to have sold the property to Wawa. Who do they think they're fooling? We've got pictures of the surveyors sent to us by a concerned reader back last Christmas. Money talks, and to the tune of 10 million dollars, apparently. Empathy my foot. It's prime real estate.

"Downward trends in religious practice":
As to the misleading demographic information continually touted by Mr. Walton, we've addressed it numerous times. It's lies. Just look here and here and here. All you have to do is look on a map to see where Magnolia is to know that the Catholic population in that area can only be expanding, not decreasing. We're not talking rural Fairton, Cumberland County here or Dennis Township, Cape May County. We're talking close proximity to Philadelphia in a congested, continually expanding area of South Jersey.

The plain fact is that the Catholic population in NJ and in South Jersey in particular is dramatically increasing. In fact the Catholic population in NJ has increased by at least 2.5% since 1990, by roughly 100,000 people. In Gloucester County alone we're looking at a Catholic increase of at least 20% since 1990. The Catholic population is only decreasing in South Jersey's only true urban centers, Camden and Atlantic City, as illustrated below:

"Reversing Downward Trends":
Do they really care about reversing supposed downward trends or about justifying their own agenda? If all they care about is giving people what they want, they should stop watering down the Faith and desiring to build protestant style megachurches. And if they are truly targeting young adults, as they should, this group wants one of two things, neither of which the Diocese of Camden is offering: (1) an authentic and unapologetic Christianity, or (2) at the very least, clarity and a lack of hypocrisy. This is why you see the most traditional churches and religious orders growing. Alternately those who are leaving the Church are leaving for a protestantism whose Christianity is clear and faith exacting. Others who leave leave the Faith and stay away out of disgust for the likes of people like Walton and others who pretend religion but in reality have nothing but political motives. See these comments on Andy's letter, for example:

We addressed this patronizing attitude just the other day. So we quote ourselves!
They have spewed psychobabble pertaining to the alleged difficulty that we, the laity have coping with change. This kind of patronizing dribble is without merit because it fails to address the purpose of the change and merely holds up "change" as having inherent value. This type of rhetoric attempts to put the Catholic faithful on the defensive, as if we have to prove our ability to healthily cope with change by accepting the destruction of our parishes. The question remains, is the change we are expected to embrace a change toward the Good, toward God's Will, toward God Himself? What are we supposed to be changing to?

8/27/09 Update:
I went to Borders tonight and was not required to show any form of identification to obtain the discount card.
Guess I lugged my lesson plan binders and things all the way over there for nothing. In the words of the former teacher employee doing the presentation, "I've never met a person who has lied about being a teacher. Besides, you can tell a teacher just by looking at them." Ha ha, so true. They gave out snacks and free give-away books, stickers, and even a $25 gift card. Apparently even Borders is struggling to keep its head above water and is now heavily targeting the teacher and homeschooler audience. Since this is our only "local" bookstore around, I feel good about trying to support it. It's the only place I can go to look inside a book before purchasing it. Also the employees working there were extremely helpful and friendly. Often this Borders is staffed by retired teachers, which is wonderful. Additionally it is open until 11pm. One Saturday a month they have story hour at 10 am for the kids. The former teacher who I mention above is also a homeschooler now (for her grandson) and a Christian, so made sure to point out the section where they keep the children's Bibles and other Christian literature. (Her husband is a protestant pastor.) I've never been a huge fan before, but now I am. Great store, great staff, great discounts. Check it out.

Maybe I'm the only one who wasn't aware of this, but in case you didn't, Borders and Barnes & Noble bookstores both offer teacher discounts and those discounts extend to homeschool instructors as well!

We just need some sort of "proof" of homeschooling, such as curricula or lesson plans. Membership in a homeschool coop or group would also suffice. I spoke with "Chris," a manager at the Deptford Barnes & Noble and "Linda" at the Hamilton Twp. Borders, both of whom confirmed that bringing in teacher lesson plans would be good enough proof, but I will see what else I can dig up to bring along.

This Thursday evening at 7pm the Borders at the Hamilton Mall in Hamilton Township, NJ (near Mays Landing) is having an event at which teachers may sign up for the teacher discount cards. At Barnes & Noble you may do this at any time. There is a particular teacher discount form you will need to request in person.

I am psyched! Homeschoolers buy a ton of books since we receive no subsidies or assistance of any kind from the state or textbooks from the schools. Of course, this the way we want it and that's all fine since the reason we homeschool is educational and religious liberty. That's just to say we spend a small fortune in books. Let me say here that I love dealing with small family bookstores where they exist online (rarely elsewhere anymore), such as Emmanuel Books or others. And we do sometimes use Amazon, particularly when there is a used book we want to purchase. In any case, hooray for books and hooray for discounts!

* I was quoted 25% but the website says 20% for orders under $1000. I will find out for sure Thursday night.

Since it's well-known, at least among people in Vineland, that Bishop Galante has long wanted to close the historic and beautiful Sacred Heart (roughly the size of the cathedral in Camden), which outrages many (myself included since this is the church of my ancestors), this is no great surprise. In fact, it's the oldest trick in the book. One way of messing with a group's identity is to remove its long-standing leader. While Fr. Amabile's mother is apparently sick, (may the Lord bless her,) that seems a very convenient thing for the Galante administration.

What's still so surprising is that a native Vinelander, Msgr. John Burton, would continue to work with Galante in achieving this end. Shame! (One wonders, is it all about getting ahead and making brownie points?)

His departure would not affect Galante's plan to cut 124 parishes in the diocese down to 68, Walton said. Sacred Heart Parish and St. Isidore the Farmer Parish on Magnolia Road will merge under the plan, with St. Isidore assuming primary worship duties.
It seems to be most people's assumption that since St. Isidore's on Magnolia has so much land, Galante plans to use it to create his gigantic Vineland, evangelical protestant-style megachurch on that spot. But I suppose a traditional and beautiful Catholic church, no matter the size or history, does not serve the bishop's purposes.

Besides all that, closing Sacred Heart would rip the soul out of what is left of downtown Vineland. What a way to build "community" and help the less fortunate--to move the main Vineland parish to the burbs.

It would seem appropriate at this time to thank the Augustinian Order, in all seriousness and sincerity, for helping us in South Jersey by sending us priests for all these years. They have been a great blessing, and continue to to be, even, as Fr. Marty Smith referred to them, as "rent-a-priests" when parishes are in a pinch. We thank you!

Sacred Heart pastor moving on to N.Y. post

VINELAND -- After nine years, the Rev. Patsy Amabile has celebrated a number of Masses at Sacred Heart Parish.

His last could come later this month.

Amabile is headed to a parish in West Islip, Long Island, N.Y., if he receives approval from Diocese of Camden Bishop Joseph A. Galante. The 67-year-old requested the move so he could be closer to his ailing mother.

Amabile would, at least temporarily, serve as pastor for Our Lady of Lourdes. He plans on returning to his "home diocese" in the future.

"As pastor, you become somewhat connected with the parishioners, and I will miss them and the friends I have made," he said.

Amabile would be taking a position within the Dioceses of Rockville Centre starting Sept. 1, Diocese of Camden spokesman Andrew Walton said.

His departure would not affect Galante's plan to cut 124 parishes in the diocese down to 68, Walton said.

Sacred Heart Parish and St. Isidore the Farmer Parish on Magnolia Road will merge under the plan, with St. Isidore assuming primary worship duties.

Monsignor John Burton of St. Isidore is the priest convener who is working with a core team of representatives from both parishes to prepare for the merger, Walton said.

"In this time of transition -- which I know they will be going through -- I know they will be in good hands," Amabile said.

Amabile requested the special transfer about five months ago so he could move closer to his 94-year-old, mother, who is living in a nursing home on Long Island.

"I think she needs me to help her while she's in the home," he said.

Amabile has been with the Camden Diocese for 19 years and a pastor at Sacred Heart for nine years.

His last day is Aug. 31, but the parish scheduled a farewell Mass and dinner on Aug. 21.

"He was our spiritual leader for almost a decade," said Frank Guaracini Jr., a deacon and lifelong member with the parish. "He is very kind and compassionate. He offered comfort and spiritual guidance to those who needed it, and I wish him well."

The parish is hosting farewell coffees this month for Amabile and the Rev. Martin Smith, an Augustinian who occasionally presided over services at Sacred Heart.

"He was very likable," Guaracini said of Smith. "He's been filling in for many, many years when other priests were not available."

Smith also will be leaving the area to take on a new role with the Augustinian Order and care for the elderly religious in Villanova, Pa., Walton said.


We received this email yesterday. It's basically what people have been predicting would happen all along. But maybe all the confusion, crowding, and lack of parking gives the Diocese the green light to build the protestant megachurches of their dreams. I, for one, am conspiracy minded enough to doubt that even those in the chancery office are so stupid as to underestimate the required parking and potential confusion of the situation they created.

However, they must be undergoing some turmoil and dissension in the ranks given that so many of the key players in the chancery's Parish Closure Program have mysteriously "left" over the past couple months. (I guess we can call it a "program" now that Ms. Marilyn Vollmer, national church shut-down queen, is gone. An appropriate name for the program might also be "Destroying God's Gifts.")  At least four of the key players have left, total. Msgr. Roger McGrath, remains, however. But maybe since he's in the area he'll come to our Assumption Feast and have such a good time, he'll learn to like us! Chicken barbecue's on us, Msgr. McGrath! Hope to see you there!

I spoke with my mother, who attends that church on Saturday nights and just as I predicted, parking is a huge problem over there. My sister works nights so she needs to go to Mass as early as possible on Saturday nights. Unfortunately, when she arrived, there were no parking spaces left, so she was unable to stay. My mother got the last parking space so she was able to attend. However, the service began ten minutes late. She said she observed people talking during the service and leaving after staying only fifteen minutes! It sounds like there was lots of confusion there.

My mother actually lives in Maple Shade so I am hoping that she and my sister find a church in the Trenton Diocese that fits their schedule. Things are less crazy up there!

Also, in the Courier Post article, the Pastor of the new Church (community, whatever) said that Queen of Heaven church would not be sold for at least a year. If that's the case, then why did they close the church now?  Also, there are still some nuns who live at the Queen of Heaven convent. Does this mean that they will be thrown out and lose their home?

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Regional School in Barrington has closed its doors for good due to low enrollment.
Big surprise...as if Bishop Galante, Roger McGrath, Peter Joyce, and the rest of the Administration didn't predict this kind of thing would happen. People get nervous, confused, and uncertain when things get shaken around this much. And people don't want their kids caught in the thick of it. It's no wonder attendance declined precipitously.

Let's face it. If merged entities close (like churches, for example), that's all the more rationale for building giant, evangelical protestant-style "McChurches." And rather than make Catholic schools what they should be--truly Catholic schools that are affordable and provide quality education--then let's just consolidate, merge, close 'em down. Why not invite in an order of teaching sisters to open or teach at a school? Yes they exist! But does our Diocese want them?

I am shocked and saddened by this news. Practically speaking, a Catholic school cannot run with only 79 students. However, my son graduated from that school and I remember the faith and dedication of the sisters and lay teachers as they taught, in word and deed, not only the 3Rs but the many aspects of our faith. I believe that they were hurt by the huge tuition increase and having the parish face a demotion as a secondary worship site. Many parishioners believe that the church will close soon as well.

Please pray for the people of Barrington. This is a great loss. 

A total aside regarding religious education: I remember being in the car driving to Sunday School, watching our pastor, Msgr. Coyne, walking the not-so-short walk to Holy Spirit High School, where we had CCD classes, after mass on Sundays. He did this at least once a month. We knew that that Sunday he would be checking up on us, popping into the classrooms, asking randomly selected children questions. It was a little scary, but we all loved him anyway. And we knew he cared about us and about our Catholic education. He wasn't trying to consolidate our CCD program or shut down our church, he was trying to grow them! And let me tell you, things weren't necessarily perfect, but that parish did prosper and grew tremendously under his care.

When was the last time you saw a priest do something like that? I do know of a couple, but it's not very common. We need priests and pastors who take a genuine interest in the religious instruction and education of those in their charge not because it's their job as a principal, president, teacher, or what have you, but because they are the shepherds of their flock who would lay down their lives for their sheep. No, it is not necessary that a priest or pastor participate in the CCD program each and every week. But they should show their concern and interest for those in their care, even if that only means a periodic visit, say a pop-in once a month or so.

Anyway, there's an absolutely beautiful statue of Our Lady holding the Infant Jesus that was being transported from the closed school in the Philly.com article. Another person who sent us a link said this:

Where Will They Go?

Many of you may have noticed that those in your acquaintance are very upset by the parish closures Bishop Galante and his Administration (those doing the work "on the ground") plan on imposing. The question remains, where will these people go if their church is closed?

We don't know what will happen ultimately. But we do know what is already happening and what people have said they will do should their church be closed. We don't notice many in leadership positions losing any sleep over it, but this is what we have noticed:

  • Some have already left the Church. No, not just their parish, but they have left the Church altogether. Disgusted and disillusioned by what is happening, they washed their hands of it and left. And more will leave as their churches are stolen out from under them.
  • Some are planning on going (or have already gone) to Byzantine Catholic churches. Yes, the Byzantine (and  many other rites) are in union with Rome and should not be confused with Eastern Orthodox churches, which are not.
  • Some plan on leaving the Diocese altogether to go to Pennsylvania, Delaware, or North Jersey. I quote, "If this bishop closes my church, I will put not another dime into a collection basket in this Diocese. I will leave the Diocese."
  • Some, in the midst of this confusion, will not attend any church at all.
  • Some will hop from one church to the next, like migrants, never at home any place in the diocese ever again. They may not even apply for membership in any one place, but only attend mass in various locations. They will not set down roots, but will fulfill their obligations as Catholics and live out their faith more or less privately. Most of these will not contribute financially in any way.
  • Some of the more traditional-minded Catholics will simply go to the SSPX or some other Catholic group.
Rest assured, we are making none of this up. This information comes from real people in various parishes across the Diocese of Camden. The question remains, do those in leadership positions in the Diocese of Camden actually care about people leaving the Diocese or even the Church? Doesn't seem like it, does it? Worse, does it serve their agenda? Possibly.

They plan on robbing us blind just to give us this (the latter link is their words, not ours, and if that ain't evangelical protestant McChurch, I don't know what is. See also this article and this one. But hey, if you like Gloucester County Community Church as much as Bishop Galante does, you may be in for a treat!).

What Does Our Lady Think?

When it comes to churches closing, Our Lady's view is pretty simple and straightforward, actually. In churches where Her Son is "praised, adored, and loved, with grateful affection" we know the answer to this question is unambiguous.

I am fortunate to have a Eucharistic Adoration slot once a week. This gives me a little time for spiritual reading, among other things. I happen to love the many books written by Joan Carroll Cruz, such as The Incorruptibles, Secular Saints, and the one I had with me, which is called Miraculous Images of Our Lady. I was reading about Our Lady of Siluva (see also this link).

Our Lady of Siluva
In the early through mid-1500s,Our Lady of Siluva, Lithuania Lutherans and Calvinists were able to win over converts in Lithuania, but only among the nobles and ruling class. The peasantry (the vast majority of the people) remained staunchly Catholic, but were persecuted. Church properties were confiscated and turned over to Protestants. In 1570 the church in Siluva was similarly threatened and in his wisdom, the pastor, Rev. John Halubka, collected

some of the church's treasured articles including a few vestments, a favorite image of the Madonna and Child that hung above the main altar, and the church's records. Placing them in a metal-covered oak chest, he buried it a short distance from the church near a large rock. This was providential, since the church was soon seized by Protestants.

Finally, in 1588, a new law was passed which gave Catholics the right to repossess church properties unjustly taken from them, but the documents clearly proving previous ownership were required. For the church at Siluva, documents could not be found to prove that Peter Giedgaudas had given the land to the Church in 1457.

...in the summer of 1608...children shepherding their flocks, saw a beautiful lady standing on a large rock. Holding a child in her arms, the lady wept bitterly.
Startled by the vision, one of the children ran to a Calvinist teacher, Mikola Fiera, who promptly claimed it to be an apparition of the devil who was trying to draw people away from Calvinism.
Hearing about the vision, people flocked to the rock. The Calvinist teacher continued to insult and riducule the people for paying any creedance to the children. But the Lady and Child appeared again. Fiera, the Calvinist, asked Her, "Why are you weeping?"

Sadly the vision answered, "Formerly in this place my son was adored and honored, but now all that the people do is seed and cultivate the land." Saying this, the lady and child disappeared.
The Calvinists tried to dismiss and argue against the apparation, but the people knew that they saw Our Lady and the Holy Infant Jesus. Shortly thereafter, Mikola Fiera left Siluva. The bishop had the matter fully investigated. A blind man, having heard about the vision,

remembered the metal-covered oak chest that the pastor had buried years before....when...taken to the rock, his sight was immediately restored. He was then able to indicate the exact location of the chest.
Lithuanian Church of Our Lady of SiluvaInside they found all the contents, including a miraculously undamaged picture of the Virgin and Child. Now having the papers in their possession, the Catholics were able to get their church back, although it took years of court negotiations with the Calvinists. Because of the sheer number of people attending the church, it had to be expanded and expanded again in 1786 (picture left). By order of the bishop, in 1663 a chapel was built in the exact location of the rock, but again the sheer number of people required its expansion in 1818 and then in 1924. (The apparition was officially approved by Pope Pius VI.) The miraculous image has been credited with many countless healings.

We may even visit a shrine to Our Lady of Siluva in Washington DC at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, where beautiful mosaics depict the story.

Our Lady's Desire
In the case of Our Lady of Siluva, She wanted Her Son to be worshiped, the church returned to Catholic hands. In the history of our Catholic faith, there are many such stories that have gone like this. I'm sure you might know of some others. What does Our Lady always do, without exception? She points to Her Son. She wants nothing more than for Her children to worship Her Son, Jesus. So when She miraculously appears, what does She so often request? She requests that a shrine or church be erected in a certain spot.

In the history of our Church, can you think of one single time that Our Lady has requested that a church faithfully dedicated to the worship of Her Son be closed?
When has she said, "Knock it down! Cose it up! Replace it with a Wawa!" No, never. Not once. She has appeared miraculously in the obscurest of locations, in places where the church had long ago fallen into ruin. But no mere falling mass attendance deters Our Lady. The church can be laying in pieces on the ground and She requests it be raised up again and the worship of Her Son continue. And it does. Why? It is Our Lord's holy will, and Our Lady's desire. Of that we can be completely confident. Truly Our Lady weeps at such travesties as churches falling into disuse, disrepair, or closure.

At St. Mary's we know that Our Lady is with us. She is our much loved patroness, as She is the patroness of every Catholic. She is our Single Greatest Advocate in Heaven, our Queen, Mother of every saint, and our Mother. Most of all, She is Mother of the Church, Mater Ecclesiae, and she intercedes for the Pilgrim Church on Earth. This is why at St. Mary's over the past year She has granted us the grace of her miraculous image changing color before our eyes. In this small way, She has reassured us of Her loving presence and protection. "Our Lady of Malaga," Mater Ecclesiae, ora pro nobis!

English Martyrs

Tyburn MartyrsToday, June 16th, is the feast day of Blessed William Greenwood, one of the Carthusian martyrs murdered by King Henry VIII. Because the monks and priests refused to show approval for the king's divorce and remarriage, and subsequent break with the One True Church, they died horrible deaths. Blessed William Greenwood died of starvation in Newgate Prison, and many others were hung, then disemboweled while still alive, and finally quartered. Check out this great website which will tell you a little more about a few of the martyrs at Tyburn. (It is the website of the Catholic Benedictine nuns located at Tyburn.)

Although their feast is not until the end of the summer (as one of the "Forty Martyrs of England and Wales"), and they died roughly 50 years later, this would be a good time to mention Saints Margaret Clitherow and Margaret Ward, pictured to the right in the painting above (left and right). Margaret Ward was executed for trying to rescue a priest from prison.

Margaret Ward was kept in irons for eight days, was hung up by the hands, and scourged, but absolutely refused to disclose the priest's whereabouts. At her trial, she admitted to having helped Fr. Watson to escape, and rejoiced in "having delivered an innocent lamb from the hands of those bloody wolves." She was offered a pardon if she would attend a Protestant service, but refused.
Margaret Clitherow (1556?-1586), whose St. Margaret Clitherowfeast day is March 25th (individually) also has a very interesting story. From Bert Ghezzi's Voices of the Saints:

St. Margaret Clitherow became a convert at her hometown of York in 1573 when it was dangerous to be a Catholic in England. Pope Pius V had excommunicated Queen Elizabeth in 1570, provoking an intense persecution of Catholics. Mass was outlawed, priests were regarded as traitors, and harboring them was a capital crime. Margaret disobeyed the law, keeping secret rooms in her house3311621203_3527287a0c_o.jpg and at a neighbor's house where priests hid and celebrated Mass.

On March 10, 1586, sheriff's men raided Margaret's house. They found a schoolmaster with her children, whom they mistook for a priest, but he escaped through the secret chamber. The officers terrorized an 11-year-old Flemish boy who lived with the family. The frightened child led them to the priests' room, where they found vessels and books for Mass. So Margaret was taken to prison to await a hearing.

John Mush, Margaret's biographer, report that she accepted her persecution lightheartedly. She and Anne Tesh, her friend also betrayed by the boy, laughed so much that Margaret said, "Sister, we are having so much fun that I'm afraid unless we are separated we shall be in danger of losing the merit of our imprisonment." And just before she was to appear before the judge, Margaret decided to cheer the 35 other Catholic prisoners across the hall. "She looked out of a window towards them," writes Mush, "and she made a pair of gallows on her fingers and pleasantly laughed at them."

Margaret was charged with harboring and maintaining priests. When the judge asked her if she were guilty or not, she declined to enter a plea. The judge warned her that the law required the death penalty for anyone refusing to plead. He told Margaret that she would be stripped, arms stretched out and bound to stakes, and pressed to death with a sharp stone on her back. "I am not worthy of so good a death as this," was her reply.

Margaret believed that her death was inevitable. Had she pled to the charges, her husband and children would have to testify against her and her neighbor's guilt would have been exposed, possibilities she could not bear. Her love for her family intensified her suffering, but did not deter her. "I love my husband next to God in this world," she wrote.

"And I have care over my children as a mother ought to have. I trust I have done my duty by bringing them up in the fear of God, and so I trust now I am discharged of them. And for this cause I am willing to offer them freely to God who sent them to me, rather than I will yield one jot from my faith."

Thus, on the Friday in Passion Week, 1586, she was pressed to death under 800 pounds of weight. Fittingly, she must have thought, she died like Christ, with her arms extended, as on a cross.
Supposedly St. Margaret Clitherow was also pregnant at the time of her death. She was publicly stripped and humiliated, as Christ, prior to her barbaric execution. Later on, her two sons became priests and her daughter a nun in France.

The English martyrs are an inspiration to all of us. May we be granted the tremendous faith they had, and may we be willing to lay our lives on the line for the sake of the Truth if necessary. May we always be willing to defend our precious Faith.

Blessed Thomas Greenwood and Saints Margaret Ward and Margaret Clitherow, pray for us!

Today is the feast day of a little known saint and his many companions. In the late 1800s in Uganda, St. Charles Lwanga and about 100 of his fellow Christians, both Catholic and Protestant, were murdered in various monstrous ways by their king. A wonderful account of their background and martyrdom can be found here (scroll down for longer account).

In short, we may easily relate to their circumstance since their society was debauched, as is our own. They were killed for standing against great sins. In brief,

King Mwanga of Uganda launched persecutions of Christians in response to their opposition to his homosexual and corrupt court. St. Charles, the master of his pages, was martyred with fourteen other pages on June 3, 1886; other companions were killed later.
Many of those killed were young. At least one of the courageous martyrs was a thirteen-year-old boy, and another was the king's "page boy," only 14. Through their blood sacrifice in the name of Jesus Christ, they were saved from being victims of pedophilia.

The lesson taught by these and other heroic saints and martyrs is that we, as Christians, must be willing to imitate their great courage by standing in opposition to all wrong perpetrated by those in positions of authority, whether inside or outside the Church. For the sake of charity, we must point out where Holy Mother Church teaches Truth and be willing to spread the holy faith, not suppress it or attempt to alter it to suit our personal desires or sense of convenience. The Truth must be made clear in order for people to know what it is and follow it.

"Building People"

The Sign

On my daily commute to and from work I pass a Protestant church, not an especially large one, that has a new sign. You know the type of sign. It's one of those signs where, using letters, you can put up changing messages or announcements. We have a similar one at St. Mary's. It's a nifty type of sign to have and very useful. The nice thing about signs like this is that you can invite the general public in to various events, place a message, or do whatever and the message is actually readable since the letters are fairly large. It also relays to the general public the vitality of a congregation.

I of course have no particular bone to pick with this church. In fact, a good friend of mine (now a Catholic "revert,") used to be a member of this church. There are also a couple of kids where I work who have told me they are members of this church. All are very nice people.

Anyway, being a religion nerd I always make a point of reading signs like this. The message they have up right now struck me immediately when they first put it up about two weeks ago. But no matter how much I've thought about it I've been unclear about the point that they are making. My first impulse was that it might be a direct response to the crisis in the Diocese of Camden, since so many other evangelical churches seem to be reaching out to the many Catholics in our region jaded by the havoc currently being wreaked by the bishop. But of course I have no way of knowing this, and probably it's not the case.

As you can see from the picture, the sign says this:

Certainly they are right in the sense that a church is not merely a structure. We read in 1Peter that we are to be living stones:

Be you also as living stones built up, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

If we are really Christians, we should be transformed in Christ. In Ephesians 4 we read that we should

put off, according to former conversation, the old man, who is corrupted according to the desire of error. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind: And put on the new man, who according to God is created in justice and holiness of truth.

In this sense, any church that truly has Christ as its center and any Christian who truly loves God should be "changed" by Him, we should be continually changing people. Of course, it cannot be understated that the Truth that is the Church does not change. We are to be changed by It. We should allow Christ to change us so that we become more closely conformed to Him. Arguably, this is our single greatest goal and challenge as Christians: to be less focused on ourselves and more focused on Him. It's really pretty simple.

Worldly Religion

And yet there's a problem here. I think the reason why the message on this sign has stuck in my mind is the potential implications. One, there is an implication that "building people" is a central objective of the church. In our individualistic day and age, this message is a gratifying one. This is, of course, not surprising. It is the reason why increasing numbers of people are willing to identify themselves not as "religious" but "spiritual."

The impetus for such a sign, wittingly or unwittingly, would be to relay the message that one can both be religious and still be "me-centered."* Is this the right message to send about your church? Not in my opinion. But it is, at least in part, a reason why so many evangelical and non-denominational-style churches are so successful in attracting people. They have a "come as you are" (and often a "stay as you are") message.

St. Paul tells us both in Romans and in Galatians to "put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ." We are no longer ourselves, but are to die to ourselves. In Romans and Colossions St. Paul tells us that we are buried with Christ in baptism:

Know you not that all we, who are baptized in Christ Jesus, are baptized in his death? For we are buried together with him by baptism unto death; that as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life.

Two, the connotation here is that treating religious practice as therapeutic exercise is not only acceptable, but is an actual function of the church.
I'm sure many of you have witnessed the horrendous consequences of me-centered, therapeutic religion. Again, the focus here is wrong. If we "stay close to Jesus," as Sr. Regina used to say back in high school, then He can heal us. But we will never be healed if the focus of our religious practice is ourselves. In this case, we are not worshiping God at all, but instead worshiping ourselves, and that is idolatry. It can be argued that idolatry is the particular sin of our society today, and as Christians we are to come out from the world (2Corinthians 6:17, John 15: 18-20).

Cappuccino Christianity

In a nutshell, this is the problem we are facing here in the Diocese of Camden. What we are confronting, what is being foisted upon us by our current bishop and his administration, is a worldly sort of Christianity, if it can even be called that.

Don't get me wrong: there is nothing wrong with wanting to be changed in Christ. It's just that individualistic religion is not and should not be a feature of Christianity. And don't get me wrong: there's nothing inherently wrong with wanting to socialize with people from your church. Not at all. It's just that having fun and gaining a social life should not be the motivation for going to church, nor should it be something we use as bait.

Catholic vs. Contemporary Protestant Views of Church

There is an excellent article in the Catholic Encyclopedia on the Church (ecclesia) in which both Catholic and the prevalent protestant views of the church are aptly summarized. The Catholic Church has always taught that the Church is a visible entity. It is a divine society, begun by Christ Jesus and with its origin in the apostles, it is a necessary means of our salvation, it is authoritative. It is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. It is, though, visible.

By contrast, a popular protestant position today is that the church is an "ideal invisible church, a mystical communion" of believers. But what kind of God would have done this to His faithful? It is fair to say, from a "common sense" rather than a heady theological perspective, that Jesus would not have left us with a splintered Church, the true faithful found scattered among the thousands of congregations and denominations, only visible to the eyes of God. After all, how then would we know where to turn? Whose authority ought we trust?

Knowing He would ultimately suffer and die for our sakes, wouldn't He have left someone in charge here on earth? Doesn't it make sense that, in His great mercy and love for us, He would have left Himself in the Eucharist? And as churches (parishes) would become established, wouldn't it make sense that He would desire His holy Presence to be preserved in these special places, where His children could commune with Him? 

We Know Him Through Our Churches

Yes, He promised us in John 14:18 that "I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you." This promise He has kept for more than two thousand years. In the synoptic Gospels He gives us His Body and Blood, true and actual Food for our souls, not metaphorical food. And He promises us in Matthew 28:20"behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world." He has given us Himself in the Eucharist, and the Eucharist is preserved in all true Catholic churches.

In that He has promised to be with us actually, corporeally, in the Holy Eucharist, in and with His Holy Church (and indeed individual parishes), he has drawn us together as one Body of Christians, not  as distinct individuals who happen to worship at the same time in the same place, but as his Mystical Bride. Though the Church itself is "not a building," as the diocesan administration is so fond of saying, the true Presence of Christ is preserved in these sacred places. And the Church itself is the Mystical yet nonetheless visible Bride of Christ.

How different a conception that is than "building people." As Christians we ought not be in the "people building" business, but in the business of glorifying God for His sake, and love of neighbor flows from that. Out of obedience to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, we need to dwell in unity and truth. The importance of the doctrine of the visibility of the Church and even of our church buildings should not be underestimated!

Therefore let it be known: Our churches are, in fact not just buildings! We as the Body of Christ, the Church Militant, with the grace of God have built them and they are our parishes, our spiritual homes, in which the Real Presence of Jesus Christ is known, loved, worshiped, and experienced. They are Communities of the Faithful, within which we are a changed people, and they are not dispensable!

Wherefore putting away lying, speak; ye the truth every man with his neighbour; for we are members one of another. (Ephesians 4:25)

* This is also the reason why so many new "Catholic hymns" such as "On Eagle's Wings" are so popular. A priest I know refers to this as the loathed "You Who Song." And certainly this is not the worst of them, but it is the one that comes immediately to mind. Consider the self-soothing lyrics (by Michael Joncas--in their entirety here). I have put in bold all the "self" references:

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord
Who abide in His shadow for life,
Say to the Lord, "My Refuge,
My Rock in Whom I trust."

And He will raise you up on eagle's wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

While the song is about trusting God, it's mostly about all the great things that God can do for you, and not so much about the glory due our Savior and Creator, His mercy, His suffering, or much else. The song mainly treats God as a bastion, but not a firm one. A squishy one. He'll make you feel better, will protect you from danger, and make you great. Kind of a cross between a teddy bear, a , a fortress, and a super hero, I guess.
