St Mary's Spotlight: friends
Partly because my (Julie's) husband is not Catholic, my [largely evangelical protestant] workplace, extended family, and other acquaintances, we happen to know a lot of non-Catholic Christians. We also happen to have fairly frequent houseguests from all over the country because my husband's denomination is so small and geographically disparate, they often travel just to get together or for meetings. Currently we have a twenty-something couple, recently married, staying with us. They are both originally from the midwest but they are currently living in Washington, D.C. They both grew up in protestant churches, she the daughter of a pastor.
When the subject of, "and where do you attend?" comes up, the church closure fiasco inevitably arises. In the past our "priest convener" has said something to the effect of, "what must the protestants think of your not going along with your bishop?" It has always struck me as strange that anyone would think that protestants would not be sympathetic to our plight because they always seem to be. But why are they sympathetic?
Based on my conversations, I would some it up with a couple of pretty simple reasons, really. One, they understand that right is right and wrong is wrong, no matter who happens to espouse the view. Second, in their enthusiasm for growing the church, they understand that closing a church flies in the face of the propagation of the Gospel. Next, they understand that corruption causes more corruption and that it is all too common in all Christian circles for the everyday people in the pew to suffer as a result. But most of all, they are baffled by the following, which is far less abstract, and usually elicit a reply to this effect:
"Two hundred fifty families? That is considered small?" Apparently, by just about any protestant denomination's standards, a congregation anywhere near this size would be considered a great success. Last night was not the first time I have witnessed this reaction. Almost every single time the subject comes up, we are asked how large St. Mary's is. Our houseguest's (the daughter of the pastor) church back in Ohio has "no more than 200 people, probably less," and his in Kansas is even smaller. To have even fifty people in attendance over the course of a weekend would be just great to them. And if you buy into the priest shortage argument is legitimate, you should see the dearth of prospective pastors in their denomination, so this reaction is not due to their great abundance of ministerial candidates. And they should know. He (the one from Kansas) works for one of their denomination's few seminaries.
To top it all off, this apparent preference of so many priests and bishops for "bigger and better" flies in the face of contemporary trends, although they don't seem to recognize that. In their effort to be more protestant and less distinctively Catholic, they are missing the boat entirely. In this day and age of the house church movement, intentionally small Christian churches, and a movement away from the megachurch model, we are witnessng a yearning for the authentic on the part of younger generations in particular and the desire for true community. They also do not seem to be noticing the fact that there are many young protestants who are embracing distinctively Catholic practices without even knowing it,** while so many Catholic leaders seem to want to purge Catholicism of those annoying little things that they think separate us from the protestants.
Meanwhile, our protestant friends are mystified by the desire of someone charged with spreading the gospel to close a church, much less dozens of them. He (the one from Kansas) said, "That is terrible from an evangelism point of view." He took the words right out of my mouth. "Yeah," I said. "One thing I'm pretty sure of is that Christ did not say, "Go, therefore, and consolidate." They laughed and nodded. "My worry," I said, "is that what is currently happening is that so many people are so disgusted with the whole thing that they are leaving not just the Church, but any church, because they figure the gig is up and it's all a bunch of crap. Hundreds of souls will be lost." He nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that's definitely true."
Over a card game last night they asked, "Where would you go?" because they understand how important and irreplaceable a tight knit community is. Without my having to explain anything, they already know that it is not so easy to just jump from one church to another, as if where one worshiped was completely unimportant. (After about a year, they themselves are still looking for a place to worship in the D.C. area and have started a small house church out of their home that meets monthly.) "I don't know what will happen," I answered. "But I do know this. We've got to fight with everything we've got."

Wakeup People the Catholic church has been dieing for the last few years, They have been closing churchs and catholic schools in the area for the last few years. Why would they leave WC open when they can force you to go to HOLY SPIRIT for a lot more money. I am surprised that WC was not closed years ago.after school or in a nightly meeting. If you are a practicing Catholic you should know better than anyone how the institution manipulates the flock toward one end -- and only one end --and that is always money. The whole irony here is that the Catholic Church is the richest organized religion in the world and is now hitting on some tough times with the abuse scandal payouts but we have to believe its coffers are FAR from empty. Many of us know or have read about the Vatican's vast real estate holdings and silent partnerships around the world and the true "business" that the church really is. For hundreds of years, these male church leaders have always been dominant and controlling with little regard for the nuns (except to dictate how they should conduct themselves and their order) and other "second class citizens" (females and children)who serve in different capacities throughout the system.

With all the school and church closings in this diocese, a good businessman would realize that the next step is to consolidate the Diocese of Camden with another, larger diocese. Exactly what is the overhead of keeping Camden as a diocese? The bishop's expenses - living quarters, food, car & drivers, secretaries; the staff at Catholic Charities & Diocesan Housing; the Star Herald newspaper. Wow! We probably could have afforded to keep our schools open if the schools were given the money being used to maintain this top heavy organization.
What an absolute disgrace, the so-called Christian decision makers should be ashamed of themselves. From the start what happened yesterday at Wildwood Catholic High School was horrible. While you can understand the point of financial problems, which raises the question, how did these problems come about? What you did to these poor children and the families was anything but Christian. What it is is just another example of how mismanagement is destroying the catholic lifestyle. So to the local managing body or the Bishop, you could never imagine what it is like to get a phone call from your child, crying uncontrollably saying that they were just told that their high school is closing forever in 6 months. Knowing that after being there for three years of their life, knowing that they will not graduate from their school, the horrible feeling of not knowing where they will go, if they will be with their friends and how this is going to affect the rest of their lives. You made these decisions without any input, concern, questions from the families. I understand that decisions like this are difficult but you could have let the families know what was going on, what was being considered, to give these families and children an idea of what to expect. And what about the teachers and the school administration, these teachers were not told anything, the school administration was not told anything until yesterday about your misguided, ill-managed and totally insensitive decision. Let's talk about the financial point. These people put their heart and soul into this school. Working for less money then any other teacher would in the public sector. I do not blame the teaching and administrative staff of Wildwood Catholic for this disaster; I blame the Catholic Church administrators and the people who were responsible for the decision to close this school. Enrolment is down because tuition is too high. The powers to be would say tuition is high because enrollment is down. You should have "bit the bullet" for a while and lowered tuition to increase enrollment. Most importantly why could you not keep the students at wildwood catholic there until they graduate, or at least keep the junior class of this year there next year to graduate. Its not like the school building is going to be closed,,, you are boosting about how the grade school is moving in there and how wonderful its going to be,,,so keep these kids there and let them graduate over the next three years and then do away with the high school level. This is a direct result of problems that the Principal Barbara Byrne from Bishop McHugh School has caused. She personally drove the enrollment from 420 to 200 in 3 years. Bishop Galante refused to take action and left her there. The priests of the sending parish's did nothing also. Galante has systematically destroyed the morale of Cape May and had done gamage to the Church that will take generations to repair.
2 points here of comment. Who on earth would bus their kids to Holy Spirit/ It is easily a 45 minute to one hour ride to Absecon. The school pools from all Cape May County and if you live south of Court House the ride is easily as stated.Second the students of Wildwood Ctholic will be in for a real culture shock if they attend public school now. The culture is night and day plain and simple!!!
Welcome to the new world of the "Economics of the Christian Religious Faith". Unfortunately this, once again, shows how religion in America has less about morals,values, and faith and more a business. The bureaucracy of religion has put America's faith and values directly in its crosshairs. Is it a wonder why we have a crisis in America concerning morals, values, and faith? However, this does nothing for the youth and families of these youth of Wildwood Cathlic High School. Keep the faith even if the Camden Diocese took a non-Christian approach in announcing their decision. Merry post Christmas!Yep, run down to Wildwood, tell the school youth of the decision without their parents present, and then run right back out of town without facing the parents after school or in a nightly meeting. What Christian values and morals did this teach these youth? This community? Maybe the Camden Diocese needs to take a look at their own faith and values. Agaim, keep the faith to the students, faculty, staff, and community of Wildwood Catholic! Even if the Diocese mo longer does.
"If you want your children to lost the faith, send them to Catholic School". Fulton Sheen said this 30 years or so ago and how true it has come. The Anarchy after Vatican II- all the changes we Traditionalists feel have gone way too far- well I would not ever send my children to a Catholic School. The Catholic Schools are not Catholic anymore. We would rather homeschool our children and bring them up Catholic than send them to Catholic school and have them lose their faith. The Diocese needs to wake up, the Church needs to wake up. Liberalizing is not drawing people to the Church, it is only driving true Catholics away.
I just wanted to say how sad this is for Cape May County. Many family members and friends were proud to call this school their school. But this is no surprise given the way this bishop has continually treated area students and their families. Perhaps if he had cleaned house at Bishop Mc Hugh 5 years ago those 80 families and the subsequent 125 kids wouldn't have chosen public school over their precious Catholic school. And if he hadn't lied to the families at St. Raymond's they wouldn't have gone onto to public school. And the same goes for Star of the Sea parents this year. My family has moved out of the area-to the Southern Bible Belt in fact. The few Catholic schools are thriving and there's an enrollment wait list and tuition for elementary is nearly same as Wildwood Catholic. Proudly, we are in planning stages to build a Catholic High School here. So many Catholics are fed up with the North East and the lies and have moved. People stand in the aisles for Sunday mass. Nobody should be surprised that familes and especially children come behind the almighty dollar and concealer.
As a Catholic, I detect an insurmountable public relations problem for the entire institution that started early on when this -- the most rapidly growing religion and today still the one claiming the largest membership of any other -- employed the practice of constantly "poor-mouthing" and the "do as I say not as I do" mentality. This fund-raising strategy imploded when the abuse scandals finally came to light. Denial has always been among the leadership's most reliable tools; however, with the testimony of real live pedophilia victims over the last two decades, there's no recourse but to pay --- in millions of dollars and image. These bishops are a bunch of businessmen (Galante only pretends to care when he sits in at the parish pow-wows attended by very distraught and long-time, old-school parishioners who actually think their protests will make any difference) and not very good ones at that. But I'll betcha their retirement packages are secure -- strong and solid as the gilded walls of the Vatican.
What a total contradiction. Earlier, The Press reported that the rumors of the school closing were unsubstantiated... Who wants to bus their kids from Wildwood to Holy Spirit and who is going to pay for that transportation?

Lay leaders at the Haddon Township parish, recently rebuffed in an appeal to a Vatican body, now plan to take their case to a church court, the group said in a statement.In saying this, Mr. Walton is, of course, mistaken. If a church's appeal is pending, the "merger" process should be put on hold. The equivalent would be sentencing a person accused person before the jury returns with a verdict.The parishioners also said they want the Vatican to decide whether the planned merger with St. Aloysius Parish can be put on hold pending their appeal. They described that issue as "unresolved."
But Andrew Walton, a spokesman for the Diocese of Camden, said "preparatory steps related to the merger will continue."
"Church law is clear," he said, asserting the parishioners' appeal "does not result in an automatic suspension of the intended merger."
The Haddon Township parishioners last year filed an appeal, or recourse, with the Congregation of the Clergy. In a response last month, the Vatican body indicated Galante already had addressed the lay leaders' concerns, when the bishop in August 208 said St. Vincent Pallotti church would continue as a worship site after the merger.But the lay leaders said they want the merged parish to have its seat at St. Vincent Pallotti church, which has undergone capital improvements worth some $1 million. Galante has said St. Aloysius will be the seat.
"The parishioners of St. Vincent Pallotti do not feel that the object of this recourse (to the Congregation) has been fulfilled, nor even addressed," the lay leaders said.
"This matter has been forwarded to the Apostolic Signatura, the Court of the Church, to initiate the appeal process," they added.
At the diocese, Walton said the Congregation's decision stated the choice of a parish seat was up to Galante. He said the Apostolic Signatura typically determines "whether the Congregation's decision-making process was in keeping with church law."
Walton also said the Haddon Township parishioners were "well within their rights" in pursuing an appeal.
"Bishop Galante believes these individuals are not only within their rights, but are motivated by sincerity, goodwill and a great love for their parish and the church," Walton said.
Of course, this begs the question, if Friends of SVP are motivated by "goodwill and a great love for their parish and the Church," what is the Bishop and those cooperating with him motivated by???
Here are a couple of comments:
1. This bishop must be stopped.
2. What else is the Bishop going to say? He is never going to admit he was wrong. I personnally see no hope for the parishioners. The Bishop will continue to throw Church Law and Doctine at the people and hope something sticks. The Catholic church is nothing more than a business. When will the members of the Catholic church realize they are only a consumer of a service and they truly do not have a say or a "real ownership" in "their" church? At one time, you could say the Church was out for the "good" of the people and respected the parishioners. Today, it appears they are out for their agenda. With the continuous arrogance shown by the Pope and the Vatican, the Church is no better than Wall Street or politicians who want everything for themselves. If the Bishop respected the parishioners, he would have asked the parishioners to determine the "seat" and only stepped if a consensus was not arrived at.
My mom died back in 2000 just after she turned 50 following a long, long, long battle with cancer, and my father has recently remarried. He let me borrow the wedding album awhile back to scan in these pictures of their wedding day. As you can see, they were clearly awesome! This was back in 1974, the height of blue eyeshadow, side burns, chunky heels, and general awesomeness all around.
On a serious note, it is nothing short of a complete and utter travesty that the bishop wants this beautiful church, every bit as beautiful and comparable in size as the cathedral in Camden, closed. It is totally unnecessary. This is the sort of thing that devastates people and drives them from the Faith in complete disgust, mistrust, disbelief. But hey, I guess it looks too...Catholic. Time to make way for the generic McMegachurch. Change the mass, change the church, change the religion. And hey, St. Isidore's has got plenty of land behind it...

Here you see my wonderful grandparents. I love them. My
grandmother, the one in the blue dress, was a school teacher
way back in the days of the one-room schoolhouse. And yes, she
had strawberry blonde hair and green eyes and yes she was
100% Italian. My grandfather owned DeMarchi Printing on West Ave.
They came from large farm families. Great ravioli and pizzelle,
among other things. My dad is on the left with his dad standing
behind him. Check out my dad's platform shoes and lambchops.
Whoa! Standing in the center of the photo is one of my grandfather's
sisters. A wonderful woman, she passed away only last year.

going to Sacred Heart with my grandparents for mass. We'd always
sit on the left hand side (not pictured above, but below).

certificate, is a Fr. Rush. I don't believe I've ever met him, but as you
can see back then, he too, was awesome. Cool sideburns, Fr. Rush!

Particularly before she got sick, my mom was a tiny little thing.
When my grandmother died we found my mom's wedding dress
in the cedar closet. I fit into it in 7th grade. Geese! Here you
can also see the amazing heads of hair on Fr. Rush and the
altar boys. Wow!

Perhaps Parvin. On the extreme left is my sister's godmother,
Patty and next to her my godmother, Susan. Next to my dad is
some guy he obviously is not friends with anymore (my guess
is "Skip"), but boy he does have a great beard, huh? Next to that
is my dad's friend, Pat, my dad's youngest brother (the long hair),
and on the extreme end my dad's middle brother. How do you like
those brides maid dresses with the floppy hats?!

We will share the article with you when we get it, but for now, the gist of it is this: the Vatican's Congregation for the Clergy has notified St. Vincent Pallotti that their request for recourse regarding the merger was not upheld. The Congregation wrote that "decisions as to
the
location of the offices of the merged parish, and the appointment of
the pastor for that parish, fall within the direct competence only of
the local bishop, and therefore outside the scope of a canonical
recourse."

Editor: As many of you may know, Monsignor Marucci, a very well liked priest and pastor and gentle advocate for the shepherd of his flock, is confined to a wheelchair. The parishioners of SVP had the rectory and church retrofitted for their pastor to easily move around and have access. It was promised that Monsignor Marucci could remain in residence there because of the accessability issues. Let's hope that for once, the Bishop and his minions have a decent bone in their body and do what is best for this priest even if not for the laity.Once again the Galante administration should be ashamed of itself for its disrespect, its insensitivity, and its running roughshod over the Catholic faithful. What we are facing is a "new catholicism," a new church, and outright theft of churches from the faithful who built and maintained them. Sadly, as in so many other dioceses throughout the country, Rome is not coming to our rescue but standing by its bishops, too many of whom are corrupt, along with others at high levels within those dioceses. And unfortunately too many fear the loss of their careers and reputations more than the propagation of clear error and the loss of souls. But by now, are we surprised?
No matter what happens, it does not excuse us, the faithful, from doing our duty as Catholics, which is to defend the Faith, which is no less than Christ and His Church.

I have received word from the diocesan Vicar GeneralWhat a slap in the face to the "process" and to all of the other churches in this diocese that would also like to remain stand-alone. "Core team" arm twisting is, apparently, part of the open and honest "process," but how such decisions are made remains a mystery to all of us. Political expedience, string-pulling, and personality conflict at high levels seem to be the order of the day. In truth, we the Catholic faithful have no real input at all, though we are required to speak the Truth by virtue of our baptism and confirmation.
that the bishop has approved the Core Team proposal that
our parish would remain a stand alone parish. But we are
encouraged to share resources and programs with the
merging parishes of Buena, Newfield, and Malaga.
This is great news for our Parish because we can continue
as usual serving the needs of the Collings Lakes area.
This is a good news 'short term' situation considering the
underlying problem of a priest shortage in our Diocese.
As more priests retire the present active priests will be
called on to do more. All of us must be ready for the future
when there may not be a priest in residence here. In the
meantime lets be a vibrant sustainable community.
To celebrate this good news we will have a wine and
cheese, coffee and cake celebration in our hall after the
Saturday evening Mass next week. Invite your friends and
family to the 5pm Mass which will have our new
'Lures of the Lakes' choir singing. Then socialize,
celebrate, and relax with your friends and neighbors.

Sadly, our friend, Bob Walsh, died Tuesday night of complications stemming from his 10-month battle with cancer. According to his son, Liam, he died in peace and without pain. Leah and Kevin were able to visit Bob for about 10 minutes that night and prayed the Divine Mercy chaplet with him and his family, who were at his bedside throughout the past week.
On a personal note, we would like to say that we feel privileged to have known Bob. He was a smart man, a kind man, a family man, a Godly man. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He was interiorly a man of great strength and conviction. We ask all of you to pray for the repose of his soul and the perseverance of his family. We know that Bob will continue to pray for us and for our churches.
The viewing will be at Kelley Funeral Home in Pitman (125 Pitman Ave) from 7 - 9 pm Friday, Oct. 30th and again from 9:30 - 10:30 am Saturday, Oct. 31st. Mass will be at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Pitman at 11 am Saturday. Burial will be at Manahath Cemetery in Glassboro.
Robert John Walsh, age 60 died on October 27, 2009. Born in Philadelphia, he lived in Pitman since 1980. He formerly worked for Liteway in Bristol, PA and Mobil Oil. For the past two years he worked as an IT Consultant for J and R Consulting in Williamsport, MD. Bob was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Pitman where he was a 7th grade CCD teacher. He was also a member and past president of the Commodore John Barry Division I, Ancient Order of Hibernians.
He was the son of the late John Charles William Walsh and Dorothy Rose Keenan Walsh and predeceased by his sister Geraldine Marie Walsh. He is survived by his sons Liam Patrick Séan Walsh of New York, NY, Collin Michael Thomas Walsh of Pitman, brother John of FL, sisters Carol Marazzi of FL, Eileen Jack of Wenonah and close friends Kathryn Yurchak and Charlotte Ryan.

Catholic theology and Church teaching are not accidental. Holy Mother Church teaches unchanging, eternal Truths. Moreover, these Truths are all connected and interconnected. Like all systems, each Truth depends upon the other; they are the structures that support the building. We do not, after all, have an atomistic system wherein one truth may stand up as a pillar without the others. Generally speaking, it is not possible, nor is it logical, to accept one teaching of the Catholic Church and dispense with the others, as if one was unrelated to the next. Once we begin to do this, the structure loses its supports and comes tumbling down.
Take, for example, our church buildings and chapels. They are designed for the worship of Christ, the King of the Universe. They are supposed to give us a glimpse of heaven. They are to surround us with examples of how we should live (depictions of the lives of Christ and the saints), who we are and were designed to be (holy sons and daughters of Our Lord), and the physical and spiritual means of getting there.

God gives us to live holy lives and resist the devil.

As Catholics, we believe that Christ is truly and physically present in the Holy Sacrifice of the Altar and that his Eucharistic Presence resides in the Tabernacle. If the King of the Universe resides in the Tabernacle, it only makes sense that that Tabernacle be located in a prominent place, front and center.
If the King of the Universe in the Tabernacle is located front and center in our churches, it only makes sense that we reverently face Him. If the King of the Universe is located in the Tabernacle, front and center, and we are all facing His Majesty, it only makes sense that we be able to kneel before Him in humility and out of love and devotion to Him.

If we truly believe that Jesus Christ, King and Redeemer of our fallen race has come to be with us sacramentally in the Holy Eucharist and that He resides in our Catholic churches, then our souls and minds ought to be elevated, our whole selves reminded of Him while we are in church, whether mass is going on or not. Throughout most of human history, people have not been literate, and even today we need reminders of what it means to live the Christian life. God allows us to use our senses to know Him. To glorify God and for the help of our souls, we are given works of art in the form of paintings, stained glass windows, statues, and other things within our churches.

Consider this. When you have a guest coming to your house, you clean up. You make ready. You prepare. If you were to have an "important" guest come to your house, you would want it to look good. In this case we have an important guest--the most important Guest possible, our Creator--coming to be with us, so great is His love for us. We should want all around us to remind us of His loving and sacrificial Presence.

But now, after roughly two thousand years of Holy Mother Church teaching usA Church for us is more than a building - it is a Sacred Space, filled with God's presence. Everything within that space - the paintings, the statues, the stained glass - exists for a spiritual purpose.
This is to provide people with a focus for prayer and an insight into God: literally a 'glimpse of heaven'. The word 'Patrimony' describes the Church's cultural inheritance in terms of architecture, art and artefacts. All witness to our Catholic past: a history of persecution, struggle and ultimately, revival. We are just custodians, with a duty to preserve these sacred treasures for the future. Today we also create the Patrimony of tomorrow by commissioning high quality Sacred art.
- about the sacredness the church building,
- about how we must be ever vigilant of the possibility of sacrilege not only personally but also in our churches and shrines,
- about how Our Lord would be with us even until the end of time both spiritually and in the Holy Eucharist in our churches and sacred places,
- about Christians sacrificing all they had materially and even their own lives for the sake of their holy churches erection and continuation,
- to fall on our knees before God in our beloved churches,
Places where Our Lord has come to us sacramentally in His unbloody sacrifice, day after day after day, we are now told to believe are buildings like any other. That isn't Catholicism. That is materialism. And that, my friends, is precisely what the devil himself would have us believe. To believe our churches are only buildings would be to deny Our Lord's Eucharistic Presence, our ultimate and eternal destiny, and that for which we were created--the worship of God. In fact, to claim that our churches are just buildings would be to deny our spiritual nature, the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, and even our sacred baptisms and confirmations. To claim that our churches are just buildings is to deny the validity of their consecrations and blessings. To claim that our churches are just buildings is an insidious lie. And a lie is a lie no matter who says it.
By a decree of the Council of Trent (Sess. XXII), Mass should not be celebrated in any place except a consecrated or blessed church. Hence it is the wish of the Church that at least cathedrals and parish churches be solemnly consecrated, and that smaller churches be blessed (Cong. Sac. Rit., 7 Aug., 1875), but any church and public or semi-public oratory may be consecrated (Cong. Sac. Rit., 5 June, 1899). Both by consecration and by blessing a church is dedicated to Divine worship, which forbids its use for common or profane purposes. Consecration is a rite reserved to a bishop, who by the solemn anointing with holy chrism, and in the prescribed form, dedicates a building to the service of God, thereby raising it in perpetuum to a higher order, removing it from the malign influence of Satan, and rendering it a place in which favours are more graciously granted by God (Pontificale Romanum). In the past, Catholics and Catholic buildings alike have been the targets of hatred and persecution. I need not list the litany of specific examples, but priests have been tarred and feathered, buildings blown up, altars desecrated, the Sacred Body of Our Lord maligned, churches vandalized. The history of anti-Catholicism in this country is well-documented and is, in fact, alive and well today. Of course in this country Catholics not even permitted to run for public office (and even when they were, there was serious doubt about their "patriotism"). Catholics have experienced horrible persecution in this and other countries, and by extension our houses of worship desecrated in the worst possible ways. Suffice it to say that many of you have likely heard the stories of your own ancestors and what they went through to preserve the faith, or even just to get to mass. I know I grew up hearing these stories of perseverance in the Faith, and my own family sacrificed much and for that I am so proud and so grateful. It is a great privilege to be born into a good Catholic family and to receive the benefits of our patrimony. The fruit of all that sacrifice is made real to us by virtue of worshiping in the places bequeathed to us by our ancestors and by the grace of God.

sacrificed so that we may have a church to worship in. St. Mary's is
unique in the sense that just about everything in (and out of) the church
was and is bought, paid for, and maintained by members over the years.
It is amazing that at this point in American Catholic history, instead of the Catholic Church being the object of hostile attacks from without, our church buildings and even the Church itself is being attacked from within. Sadly, our shepherds are leading their sheep astray, and many souls will be lost. Instead of protecting our churches, our patrimony, they are being closed (and often the contents sold on ebay) and when faithful Catholics hold tight to the timeless teachings of their Faith, they are called all manner of things from "disobedient" to "unchristian" and worse. Sometimes these attacks are leveled, shamefully, by their own priests and bishops. Yes, many of the very bishops who
- harbored child abusers, shuffling them from one parish to the next
- affiliate themselves and do business with the likes of criminals who would steal churches and schools right out from under unsuspecting Catholics
- allow the rampant sexual impropriety of priests in their diocese
- advocate such unorthodox doctrine as married, gay, and "womyn" priests; as well as downplay of the sacrificial nature of the mass and many other things
- repeatedly lie to the faithful in matters ranging from real estate transactions to canon law to theological Truth
- justify closing churches by claiming there's a "priest shortage" and then persecuting and sending away priests by the dozen...

This is just one example of what we have to look forward to if the
likes of Bishop Galante and Marilyn Vollmer get their way. The
"priest shortage" red herring has been used as an excuse to
justify all manner of practices, from church closures to major
church, umm, "redecorations." I suppose in this day and age
this church could be considered "fortunate" to have survived
at all and to have a statue of our Blessed Mother still within it.
Sadly, it doesn't seem that they kneel anymore, but I
bet they hold hands a lot.

He gave His All for us, so great was His love! He even gave us His very own perfect Mother to be our Mother, too! Do we pack it in now, or do we continue to live that sacrifice in our own lives? Our Lord gave us our churches. He gave them to us for a very good reason: so that we could worship Him! He entrusted them to us that we may be good stewards of his holy Houses. We are called to lives of grace and sanctity, and we are called to defend the Faith by virtue of our baptism. We are to defend the Faith from all who attack it, whether the attackers be outside the Church or within it. Remember, St. John Bosco assures us that when the Church is battered by enemies from within or from without, salvation can only come from JESUS IN THE EUCHARIST; MARY, THE HELP OF CHRISTIANS; and THE POPE, the vicar of Christ on earth.
I rented it from Netflix. It's a gorgeous movie with a star-studded cast, the acting superb, the cinematography wonderful, period clothing impeccable, script well-written, the events historically accurate. There's not a thing wrong with this movie. The problem? The subject matter.Fr. Damien, who I just discovered was canonized less than two weeks ago by our holy pontiff (YES!!!!), was a Belgian Sacred Heart priest who worked among the lepers on the island of Molokai in Hawaii during the mid to late 1800s. When considering the topic of leper colonies--something I never thought much about, to be honest--it simply never occurred to me that children found to have the disease would be forcibly separated from their parents, wives from husbands, and so forth, never to be seen again. To be shipped off to Molokai was itself like death.
They were treated more like criminals than innocent victims of disease. The infected were hunted out, often by police and officials, and put into forced segregation. Torn from family and friends and lost in the grim strokes of despair and death, the unwanted existed in their damp seclusion....most of the patients' ceilings were only the canopy of the sky.*
To witness this barbarism even in movie form was simply heart wrenching. That's why it took so long to finish the movie.
Another effect of exile I had never considered was that of vice. Apparently, faced with one's inevitable demise and death, and lacking the mores and expectations of a larger society, many felt they had nothing to lose in debauchery. Fr. Damien, who volunteered and was not sent to live among the lepers, had all these difficulties to face and more. The only priest on the island, and disallowed to leave, he was not permitted to go to confession for long periods of time. Refused permission to board a steamliner with a priest (Fr. Modeste) aboard, and
the ship not allowed to dock on Molokai, Fr. Damien was forced to make
his confession while screaming from a rowboat. (This true event is portrayed in the movie.)Though he repeatedly requested and prayed for not only a priest to come hear his confession, but also material and human aid for the more than a thousand sick and dying people on Molokai, he was refused time and again by his bishop and superiors. Although there were nuns and others willing to come help, they were refused admittance to the leper colony by the bishop and Board of Health, and money and materials were withheld from the saint and needy lepers. He had no doctors, no nurses.
Additionally, the protestants on the Board of Health had a hand in forcing Fr. Damien to remain on the island, supposedly for fear of spreading the disease. They thought that "by forcing him to stay he would leave the settlement altogether. Jealousy had prompted them to destroy a hope that they would not fulfill themselves."**
Because Fr. Damien had no doctors or nurses, grave diggers, construction workers, maintenance men, farmers, teachers, and children were without parents, he became all these things. "Everyone looks on me as a father. As for me I make myself a leper with the lepers to gain all to Jesus Christ," the great saint said. His sermons began, "We lepers."
As if all this was not enough, he also established sodalities, a brass band, trained interested people in church music, evangelized voraciously the many non-Catholics (he baptized over a thousand people), administered the sacraments, established perpetual adoration, and built orphanages. Needless to say his favorite saint was the great missionary Francis Xavier.
Despite Fr. Damien's tireless efforts, his bishop said this, "I regret that the admiration for this work of charity is erroneous. I see with displeasure that the newspapers who admire you exaggerate by putting things in a false light."*** Both his provincial superior and his bishop were not only discouraging, they treated him horribly and undermined his efforts to do the Lord's work among people who needed so much help. Finally his superior, Fr. Leonor (depicted in the movie by Derek Jacobi) admitted that the bishop was "suffering from the disease of jealousy. Public esteem for anyone other than himself is his torment." The bishop did not wish donations to be given to Fr. Damien on Molokai but all to be lavished instead on him. Again we see how greed undermines God's will. But the provincial superior, Fr. Leonor, was no better. In fact as time went on the Board of Health relaxed somewhat in restricting Fr. Damien's movements, but Fr. Leonor continued to restrict him and severely limited his ability to go to confession.
Finally Fr. Damien contracted leprosy, a natural result of his coming into direct contact with the disease for so long. Adding insult to injury, he was accused of "impious activity," shall we say, in contracting the disease. This was completely without foundation, meant only to drag down his reputation.
It seems Fr. Leonor treated Fr. Damien with disdain until the great saint's death.
As Fr. Damien lay dying (left), Leonor even refused to send him a crucifix for the leper's chapel. It is unfortunate that throughout Catholic history, despite physical and spiritual need, there have been too many bishops and prelates who care little for the salvation of souls. We need only read the lives of countless saints to see how many struggled with their superiors and bishops. We find ourselves living in another of these eras in which material and corporate logic trumps spiritual need, an era in which not only are we being deprived a crucifix but our entire churches are being stolen away. May the good Lord bless his very many faithful servants throughout our blessed Church's history. And may Fr. Damien, saint of the lepers, faithful despite all opposition, pray for all of us.Thankfully by the time of his death he received some human assistance and increased supplies, and his reputation has of course been vindicated. The great saint was only 49 at the time of his death.
No description on my part could ever do St. Damien of Molokai or the movie justice. I highly recommend renting or buying the movie. Also, supplement your viewing by obtaining for $2 the From the Housetops periodical (link below) with a succinct but ample biography of this great new saint of the Church. He is yet another saint who, in the face of persecution from both his immediate superior and bishop, was able to build chapels, spread the Faith, and act as a true father as shepherd of all to a people without hope.

So true! There are so many scattered sheep. Our churches are ways to bring them back to home to God and to the Faith. Closing them up just closes that familiar door, the only way they know back to return to Him.
Although following Katrina this parish was slated to be closed, the parish pitched in, with their pastor at the helm. They believed in themselves, their faith, their parish, and, well, you read the story. It'll bring tears to your eyes.

Determined priest provides place for parishioners after Hurricane Katrina

Rev. R. Tony Ricard never doubted that the red-brick church on St. Roch Avenue would reopen. The Rev. R. Tony Ricard slipped inside his deathly still church and smelled something unfamiliar: mud.
It was September 2005, and New Orleans was a ghost town. The 8th Ward neighborhood that surrounded Our Lady Star of the Sea lay in ruins. His rectory had taken in 6 feet of water from the levee failures that followed Hurricane Katrina.
But the ebullient priest never doubted that the red-brick church on St. Roch Avenue would reopen.
"There was something in my heart that told me, 'People are coming back to Our Lady Star of the Sea no matter what, ' " Ricard, 45, says. "So I never asked, 'What do we do if they don't come back?' I asked, 'What do we have to do to bring everyone back?' "
During 77 days of living in exile with his family near Leesville, his faith grew stronger.
"My parishioners were people who had always lived in New Orleans, and I knew they wanted to come home as much as I did, " he says.
The native New Orleanian -- "Father Tony" to his parishioners, the young men he mentors and members of the New Orleans Saints, for whom he serves as Catholic chaplain -- reasoned that if he opened the church, his flock would return to the city.
"Our people were scattered around the country like refugees, " he says. "I thought, 'The church is a way to bring them home.' "
The 75-year-old building, raised several feet above the ground, sustained relatively minor damage from Katrina: The air conditioning and heating units were ruined, and the wooden floor needed refinishing, but otherwise, the lovingly refurbished church was in good shape.
He and his parishioners had brought it back from the brink of death once already. He knew they could do it again.
"What we had going for us was faith and an awful lot of love, " he says.

The congregation of Our Lady Star of the Sea grew week by week as word spread about the dynamic new pastor, and in eight months the working-class worshipers donated $50,000 to restore the church's interior.
When he became pastor in July 2001, the church at 1835 St. Roch Ave. was crumbling. Active members numbered 120, and there were rumors that the archdiocese was going to close the church.
But instead of performing the last rites, the young priest challenged the people to breathe life back into Our Lady Star of the Sea.
He told them, "I will bring my gifts to the table, but you need to bring your gifts, too."
His lively homilies made them believe in themselves and their church and convinced them to be generous during the offertory. The congregation grew week by week as word spread about the dynamic new pastor, and in eight months the working-class worshipers donated $50,000 to restore the church's interior.
"They were determined to save their parish, " he says.
At that time, a pastel mural behind the altar showed Mary surrounded by a host of fair-skinned angels.
"But all those angels had moved to Metairie, " Ricard jokes.
New Orleans artist Vernon Dobard convinced the new pastor that behind that wall were other angels trying to get out. As part of the renovation, the New Orleans artist created "The Dance of Holy Innocence, " a vibrant floor-to-ceiling mural that shows Mary surrounded by gorgeous angels in flowing gowns, representing the various cultures that have worshiped at Our Lady Star of the Sea.
"It was so beautiful, " Ricard says, "people cried when they saw it."

In the dark days that followed the hurricane, Ricard had another reason to reopen Our Lady Star of the Sea. His second parish, St. Philip the Apostle in the 9th Ward, had been under 10 feet of water for weeks and couldn't be salvaged. He wanted members of St. Philip's to have a place to call home.
"It was really a kind of natural migration, " he says.
He had been appointed pastor of that church a few months after becoming pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea, and for five years he had the difficult job of dividing himself between the two church communities.

"What we had going for us was faith and an awful lot of love, " Ricard says.
"It was like having two families, " he says. "It also meant I had two sets of old ladies who thought they knew everything about running a church."
At the same time, his reputation as a national speaker was growing, and he was traveling nearly every month.
"It was tough going back and forth, " he says. "It was a challenge for the parishioners and for me."
Katrina left far greater challenges in its wake, but Ricard was undaunted. On Christmas, less than four months after the storm, he celebrated Mass with more than 400 parishioners.
"I called it the 'we-opening' of our church, " he says.
In February 2006, after he learned that Our Lady Star of the Sea was not on the reopening list released by the Archdiocese of New Orleans, he asked for the chance to prove his church could survive.
He explained to the congregation what that meant: They would have to pay their bills. They would have to pay their monthly assessment to the archdiocese. They would have to come up with the money for repairs to the church.
"I told them, 'We have to do this all on our own, ' " he says.
They opened their hearts and their pocketbooks, and when Ricard traveled around the country speaking he would ask the congregations to take up a second collection for his church instead of paying him.
At the gospel Mass on Dec. 16, 2007, when he read the letter from Archbishop Alfred Hughes announcing the official reopening of Our Lady Star of the Sea, 525 people stood up and cheered.
"Today, we rejoice that like that reed swaying in the wind, we have not been broken by the disaster of Katrina, " their pastor told them. "We have not faltered. We have not failed."

Since it's well-known, at least among people in Vineland, that Bishop Galante has long wanted to close the historic and beautiful Sacred Heart (roughly the size of the cathedral in Camden), which outrages many (myself included since this is the church of my ancestors), this is no great surprise. In fact, it's the oldest trick in the book. One way of messing with a group's identity is to remove its long-standing leader. While Fr. Amabile's mother is apparently sick, (may the Lord bless her,) that seems a very convenient thing for the Galante administration.
What's still so surprising is that a native Vinelander, Msgr. John Burton, would continue to work with Galante in achieving this end. Shame! (One wonders, is it all about getting ahead and making brownie points?)
His departure would not affect Galante's plan to cut 124 parishes in the diocese down to 68, Walton said. Sacred Heart Parish and St. Isidore the Farmer Parish on Magnolia Road will merge under the plan, with St. Isidore assuming primary worship duties.It seems to be most people's assumption that since St. Isidore's on Magnolia has so much land, Galante plans to use it to create his gigantic Vineland, evangelical protestant-style megachurch on that spot. But I suppose a traditional and beautiful Catholic church, no matter the size or history, does not serve the bishop's purposes.

Besides all that, closing Sacred Heart would rip the soul out of what is left of downtown Vineland. What a way to build "community" and help the less fortunate--to move the main Vineland parish to the burbs.
It would seem appropriate at this time to thank the Augustinian Order, in all seriousness and sincerity, for helping us in South Jersey by sending us priests for all these years. They have been a great blessing, and continue to to be, even, as Fr. Marty Smith referred to them, as "rent-a-priests" when parishes are in a pinch. We thank you!

Sacred Heart pastor moving on to N.Y. post
VINELAND -- After nine years, the Rev. Patsy Amabile has celebrated a number of Masses at Sacred Heart Parish.
His last could come later this month.
Amabile is headed to a parish in West Islip, Long Island, N.Y., if he receives approval from Diocese of Camden Bishop Joseph A. Galante. The 67-year-old requested the move so he could be closer to his ailing mother.
Amabile would, at least temporarily, serve as pastor for Our Lady of Lourdes. He plans on returning to his "home diocese" in the future.
"As pastor, you become somewhat connected with the parishioners, and I will miss them and the friends I have made," he said.
Amabile would be taking a position within the Dioceses of Rockville Centre starting Sept. 1, Diocese of Camden spokesman Andrew Walton said.
His departure would not affect Galante's plan to cut 124 parishes in the diocese down to 68, Walton said.
Sacred Heart Parish and St. Isidore the Farmer Parish on Magnolia Road will merge under the plan, with St. Isidore assuming primary worship duties.
Monsignor John Burton of St. Isidore is the priest convener who is working with a core team of representatives from both parishes to prepare for the merger, Walton said.
"In this time of transition -- which I know they will be going through -- I know they will be in good hands," Amabile said.
Amabile requested the special transfer about five months ago so he could move closer to his 94-year-old, mother, who is living in a nursing home on Long Island.
"I think she needs me to help her while she's in the home," he said.
Amabile has been with the Camden Diocese for 19 years and a pastor at Sacred Heart for nine years.
His last day is Aug. 31, but the parish scheduled a farewell Mass and dinner on Aug. 21.
"He was our spiritual leader for almost a decade," said Frank Guaracini Jr., a deacon and lifelong member with the parish. "He is very kind and compassionate. He offered comfort and spiritual guidance to those who needed it, and I wish him well."
The parish is hosting farewell coffees this month for Amabile and the Rev. Martin Smith, an Augustinian who occasionally presided over services at Sacred Heart.
"He was very likable," Guaracini said of Smith. "He's been filling in for many, many years when other priests were not available."
Smith also will be leaving the area to take on a new role with the Augustinian Order and care for the elderly religious in Villanova, Pa., Walton said.

Part 1 of a Series: The Merging & Closing of Camden Diocese's Parishes
It is a frenetic time for United States Catholics.
The Diocese of New York is preparing to usher in a new cardinal, and the Diocese of Boston and others nationwide are trying to handle the ongoing fallout from the priest sexual abuse scandal.
Closer to home, the protracted battle between the Diocese of Camden and several of its parishes threatened with mergers or closures continues in an increasingly steadfast man-ner.
So far, the reconfiguration of Gloucester City-area churches appears to be rolling along steadily and smoothly.
If a movie, it might be called All Quiet on the Western Camden Front.
But, outside Gloucester City, it is more like Too Quiet on the Western Front.

I recently purchased a children's book called The Legend of the Cape May Diamond by Trinka Hakes Noble, illustrated by E.B. Lewis. I highly recommend it not only for its wonderful storytelling, beautiful pictures, and local history value, but also because it's sort of a metaphorical tale.
As long as I can remember we collected Cape May diamonds, and we brought them home and tumbled them, made them into jewelry, collected them, etc. My dad even had one made into an engagement ring for his wife. But I had no idea of how they came to be or of their historical importance.
In this story, the Delaware River "could not tell where it was going"
"high up in the old Appalachian Mountains" thousands of years ago. So the river said, "I will send my best daughters downstream to see where my journey leads...someday they will return to tell me what they have seen."The story continues by telling the story of these "dutiful daughters of the Delaware." Though their journey was long and rough, and they were "scoured and burnished and polished by the rough river beds," though they traveled unseen along the bottom of the river, it was because of this experience that "the little stones [turned] into sparkling eyes, bright and clear, so they could see everything."
And it was because of this that the stones were held in high esteem by the Lenape people. The stone's ability to be seen through meant it "would have a higher purpose" and never be used as wampum (currency).
"And so the Lenape people made this sacred stone the symbol of loyalty and lasting friendship, because a true friend is a trusted friend with nothing to hide, just like this rare translucent stone."
Interestingly, in 1735 a large group of Lenape, the Kechemeche tribe, "decided to move further inland, away from the European settlers, but their chief, King Nummy, stayed behind. Before they left, the Kechemeche tribe presented King Nummy with a large flawless stone to pledge their enduring loyalty and friendship to him."
I'm not sure what it is about this story I find so touching. In part I think it's just deeply personal for me, for some reason. But I also think that in the story the Cape May diamond represents the human heart, and the Delaware River represents God. Our hearts should be transparent, just as our lives should be. Really we should have nothing to hide. Like these "little sparkling daughters of the Delaware" which "glisten like tears in the shallow waves because they never got back to tell the river of [their] beautiful journeys," we too are shaped by God in our lives. Sometimes the water becomes "murky, harsh, and salty." Sometimes we, too, are pushed and pulled by powerful tides, feeling as if we may be "swept out to sea, never to be seen again." But we never struggle in vain. We must trust God in His wisdom.
"Although he should kill me, I will trust in him..." Job 13:15*
All along their journey, the little stones observed many wonderful things about life in and along the river, and in their obedience remembered them saying, "This will please the river." In the end, if we keep the Faith, we will become things of great value, "precious little stones."
* Poor old Job was a "type" or prefiguration of Christ, an innocent man who is afflicted, but also a type of "sinful man" who struggles with God. In his tremendous suffering, he even wondered "why did I not die in the womb" (Job 3:11). So often is God's will mysterious. We do not understand why we suffer in this life. Tonight I heard Fr. Benedict Groeschel say that he thought it very likely that the Blessed Mother in her great anguish prayed that her Son would not be crucified, but ultimately He was, since it was, of course, God's will. Though He was and is the Savior of the world and His suffering had great purpose, our own suffering also has purpose, if only to help us rely on Jesus. But we must not become resigned, we must persevere. With the gift of fortitude, we become shaped by God in His infinite mercy.
What will happen to the faithful when their churches are threatened, their faith rocked, and controversy and corruption rule the day? Our Lord paints a disturbing picture. Wickedness leads only to spiritual death. It is in Justice, who is the Lord God alone, that we may place our hope, and consequently we are called to live uprightly.
Proverbs 11 in its entirety is a scripture that speaks to our time and circumstance. Truly we must follow God for His own sake and not our own, because He is God the Truth and deserves our total commitment. Through His Word, the Lord teaches us again and again that righteousness is to be pursued for its own sake, because it is His way, not because we can expect righteousness as an end result or because we hope for some special favors in this life. It's as simple as this: Good may never be obtained by doing wrong. That is God's law.
Either make the tree good and its fruit good: or make the tree evil, and its fruit evil. For by the fruit the tree is known. O generation of vipers, how can you speak good things, whereas you are evil? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of a good treasure bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of an evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. Matthew 12:33-35
We rise by God's grace and fall by our own doing. We elect not to follow Christ--there are no accidents in this life. We should not be deceived by "the mouth of the wicked;" we must choose to seek out the truth and follow it. Therefore we beg the mercy of the Father and pray never to succumb to wickedness. "The dissembler with his mouth deceiveth his friend: but the just shall be delivered by knowledge." Wickedness comes from only one place, one being, and that being is not God. Be delivered by the uncomplicated Truth.
May God help us in this time of trial! God bless all of you, and please continue to pray daily for the bishop and all those working with him. Offer up a little prayer or sacrifice for his conversion and for the many countless souls who will likely perish as a result of this unholy de-evangelization. Even without church closures, the "last nails in the coffin" have been hammered for many who have already left the Faith or would never again entertain the thought of returning. Many of us have, unfortunately, witnessed this in our interactions with disgusted friends, family, and neighbors. Sadly, even good, practicing Catholics have begun to have doubts of all kinds. The faith of so many have been shaken by this crisis. But let's not forget that what's at stake is the dethroning of Christ. Christ must be seated on the throne of our hearts. He must be enthroned within our Diocese also, or else it is a house built on sand.
At length he appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again. And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned. Mark 16:14-16At last, here are some pieces from Proverbs 11:
3 The simplicity of the just shall guide them: and the deceitfulness of the wicked shall destroy them. 4 Riches shall not profit in the day of revenge: but justice shall deliver from death. 5 The justice of the upright shall make his way prosperous: and the wicked man shall fall by his own wickedness.
6 The justice of the righteous shall deliver them: and the unjust shall be caught in their own snares. 7 When the wicked man is dead, there shall be no hope any more: and the expectation of the solicitous shall perish. 8 The just is delivered out of distress: and the wicked shall be given up for him. 9 The dissembler with his mouth deceiveth his friend: but the just shall be delivered by knowledge. 10 When it goeth well with the just the city shall rejoice: and when the wicked perish there shall be praise.

Bishop Galante preached from today's gospel, Mark 2:1-12 (partial excerpt below):
And they came to him, bringing one sick of the palsy, who was carried by four. And when they could not offer him unto him for the multitude, they uncovered the roof where he was; and opening it, they let down the bed wherein the man sick of the palsy lay. And when Jesus had seen their faith, he saith to the sick of the palsy: Son, thy sins are forgiven thee.
Bishop Choby of Nashville (as seen on EWTN) mentioned, in reference to the same Gospel reading, that we ought to remember that as we enter the Lenten Season, we do so as communities of faith and not as isolated individuals. Indeed we would not be true Christians if we failed to defend Christ and His Church and our smaller communites of Faith as communities of Faith. Mark 2 reminds us that as brothers and sisters in Christ, we enter no struggle alone.
Interestingly, Bishop Galante spoke about how the friends of the sick man were willing to do whatever it took to bring him before Jesus. St. Mary's parishioners in attendance at the St. Joseph's mass were in complete agreement with Bishop Galante, as we too are willing to do whatever it takes to bring Jesus to the people. For twelve consecutive years we have had three days a week of Eucharistic Adoration, not to mention the many other groups, activities, and apostolates of St. Mary's. Beginning tomorrow we will have Perpetual Adoration of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. In this world, there is no more important activity than Holy Mass and prayer before our Eucharistic Lord. Both require that our little church, a true powerhouse of prayer and bastion of love for Our Lady, remain open! We will spare nothing and go to whatever length we are able to remain before Jesus, the fount of all healing, in our little corner of heaven on earth, St. Mary's Malaga.
Clarifying a Misleading Diocesan Administrator on Prayer
When Marilyn Vollmer tried to explain prayer to the multitudes, she said we often don't receive what we pray for. I thought and prayed about that point when I was in first grade. I later found out that we often get something better than what we pray for.* In fact, true prayer--which Marilyn Vollmer ought to study because her immortal soul depends on it--always has a primary goal to give honor and glory to God.
Our Lord teaches us that fact in the Our Father. The fact that the first words and the Name of that prayer are stressing the relationship we have with God. Any other reason for praying is secondary, far down on the list of genuine prayer. "Lifting of the mind and heart to God" says everything. No conveners or facilitators need apply.
Prayer and Our Blessed Mother
In our battle against the devil Catholics make the consecration to Our Lord through the Immaculate Heart of Mary and that is true prayer. Our Blessed Mother's prayer, which is subordinate to the Our Father but flows from it, gives all honor and glory to God. "My soul doth magnify the Lord" (St. Luke 1:46). The actions of our Blessed Mother and St. Elizabeth portray the perfection of prayer.
First, there is the salutation of our Blessed Mother that leads to the sanctification of her child, St. John, in her womb. This encounter is the model for all who hold human life sacred. When prayer is performed properly, great and majestic events take place.
Our Blessed Mother greets us in every prayer because she is always united to Our Lord and brings Our Lord to us. St. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost (St. Luke 1:41). This is what happens to us in our devotion to our Blessed Mother. Unbelievers don't allow these words to penetrate the heart. Believers never doubt nor fear the encounter with Jesus through the intercession of His Mother.
Proper Lenten Prayer and Practices
That is why our prayers enable us to prepare for Lent properly as in the Latin Ordo (calendar of the saints). We dismiss the apostates'** practices of stones in the holy water font, having the Resurrected Lord in place of the Crucified Lord, failure to practice bodily mortification (we practice penance), substituting yoga instead of the Stations of the Cross, and ignoring the law of abstinence on Fridays. The apostates in the Church like to tell us how they enjoyed their vacations. There aren't any vacations in Hell.***
Holy Examples are No Accident: They are God's Grace!
Sr.Mary Celine of the Felician Sisters of Lodi taught us the above in the seventh grade. We knew of that material on prayer before that, but Sr. Mary Celine stood out by living that prayer in a cheerful way. It was a grace for me to find out that Sr. Mary Celine often visited a family at St. Mary's, Malaga long before I came here. Those graces never stop coming to our Shrine Parish!

Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the Kingdom of Heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit. "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.... We can therefore hope in the glory of heaven promised by God to those who love him and do his will. In every circumstance, each one of us should hope, with the grace of God, to persevere 'to the end' and to obtain the joy of heaven, as God's eternal reward for the good works accomplished with the grace of Christ. - Interestingly, see James 4:1-5, the section summarized as, "The evils that flow from yielding to concupiscence and being friends to this world." Perhaps this is why Ms. Volmer does not receive that for which she purports to pray.
From whence are wars and contentions among you? Are they not hence, from your concupiscences, which war in your members? You covet, and have not: you kill, and envy, and can not obtain. You contend and war, and you have not, because you ask not. You ask, and receive not; because you ask amiss: that you may consume it on your concupiscences. Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world, becometh an enemy of God. Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you.
Again, if we keep his commandments. See 1John 3:21-22: Dearly beloved, if our heart do not reprehend us, we have confidence towards God: And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.

On a snowy January 19, 2002 my husband, Ed (Byrnes) and I were married by his brother, the late Father John Byrnes at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic church in Woodstown in front of all of our family and friends. If you know where Cowtown Rodeo is St. Joe's is not too far from there. St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church is a small little country church which resembles the little country churches often depicted on Christmas cards. Our wedding was beautiful. Ida Nicolosi who comes from a Catholic farm family sang the "Ave, Maria" like an angel while the late Mrs. Judy Miller, who was a dairy farmer, played the organ perfectly. We, like many other parishioners gave donations to build a brand new parish center. At that time we were struggling to keep the farm. My husband and I had dreams....we had dreams to farm, raise a family and attend Mass at the Catholic Church which was built by many who faced persecution and hardships, including the Byrnes family. Dear and Holy Father Byrnes gave Ed and I the gift of the Holy Sacrament of Marriage. Respect for the Sacrament of Marriage begins with keeping our Catholic churches open!
Ed and I were forced from our parish of St. Joseph's RC in Woodstown in manner that wasn't Christian. We were treated this way because we opposed all the Catholic church and school closings, including our own parish. God and Our Blessed Mother made us hear the Bells of St. Mary's in Malaga, NJ where there is a brave and holy Catholic Priest who defends the Catholic Faith and the parish. Father Romanowski has a true and sincere love for God and our Blessed Mother. He loves us all too. Holy Orders is a sacrament too. If Cardinal Hummes of the Congregation of Clergy in Rome or Bishop Galante has any respect for the PRIESTHOOD, then they would leave Father Romanowski to remain as Pastor of St. Mary's in Malaga as is wanted by God and our Blessed Mother.
Our Cardinals and Bishops should be marching along side of us for the March for Life in Washington, DC. Instead of closing down our parishes, Bishop Galante should have had a pro-life postcard campaign done months ago. It was also a disgrace to see President Obama, a pro-abortion political figure, on the front page of the Catholic Star Herald instead of our Holy Father Pope Benedict. My mother-in -law (God bless her soul) , Anna Byrnes, would have been upset by this. It was a major disrespect for all those who participated in the March for Life too. I guess that shows you where our bishop's loyalties lie. But saints down the ages have had troubles with bishops, including even St John Bosco, who struggled with his archbishop.
The bottom line is this: It is a sin to destroy God's house. It is a sin to remove from our towns God, Our Blessed Mother, Holy Spirit and all of the Angels and Saints. (Every Catholic church has a guardian angel), Holy Catholic Mass, the Holy Eucharist, Confession, Rosary, Divine Mercy....
There is a Latin saying that states: "An action is good when it is good in every respect; it is evil when it is evil in any respect." If our Bishops and Cardinals put their faith in The Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, things would be alot different. ALL PRIESTS NEED TO HAVE COURAGE AND PUT THEIR FAITH IN GOD BY PROTECTING THE TEACHINGS OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.

To be honest, we didn't have high expectations for the turnout at the rally outside St. Charles Borromeo. Imagine the allure: "Drive a half hour or so to come hold a sign on a weekday January morning/afternoon in pouring rain! Surely you don't have anything better to do, anyway, like work, homeschool, or laundry, right?" Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Let that be a lesson: never underestimate the commitment of our Council of Parishes membership!
The meeting held inside the church was one to which approximately 40 "priest conveners" were invited, in addition to various lackeys like undercover sisters Marilyn Vollmer and Roseanne Quinn, and of course Bishop Galante. The purpose of the meeting was, effectively, to give a pep talk to the priest conveners.
They brought in a slick consultant to speak with them. (Hey, at least we know our money is being spent on something useful...SIKE!) She is facilitator Peg Garvey-Mitchell from the "National Pastoral Life Center" (again ironic since the whole program is intended to destroy pastoral life by destroying parishes and communities).

It is our understanding that morale is very low not only among priests in the diocese generally, but also among the priest conveners. This is why the meeting was needed. We have learned that several priests--none of whom have contacted the Council of Parishes or Savestmarys.net in any way, nor have we contacted them--are having serious second thoughts about their status as priest conveners. So the imposed program is apparently unpopular among laity and clerics alike, with the exception of a select few. (One wonders how, precisely, this select few envision themselves personally benefiting from this diabolical scheme, but we digress.)
Our information of low morale may have been confirmed by the attendance at the "pep talk" meeting yesterday. In retrospect we should have been more methodical about counting each priest as he entered the building, but judging from the cars in the parking lot upon our arrival (we got there very early) and the number of priests we saw enter the building, we estimate only about 20-25 priests actually bothered going.
