Instead of attempting to improve Catholic education, instead of being a true shepherd of souls, Bishop Galante has again decided to level the boom. Attacking the same young, Catholic students he claims to want to win over with his coffee houses, he decides trying to create truly great Catholic high schools is just not worth it. Better to close them. Shame on you, Bishop Galante, Fr. Field, and all those who cooperate actively or by their silence with the continued destruction of our Diocese and our Faith.

If Galante & Co. Church & School Closure Corporation haven't already noticed, closing people's churches and schools turns people off to the Faith. But aside from what ends up in the collection basket, what do they care?

As a side note, I (Julie) attended Holy Spirit, and there were a handful of kids who attended there who lived in Avalon. They came a very long way to attend that school and let me tell you, the education we received at HSHS was, in my opinion, not fabulous and did not hold a candle to my K-8 public school. The point? No one should have to go out of their way to attend Holy Spirit.

But if you scroll down, you'll see one of the real motivations for the closure: they want the space for the new "merged" gradeschool. Also, Galante and Co. have selected Holy Spirit as the "high school to survive," so to speak, so by closing Wildwood Catholic they suppose that'll help boost HSHS enrollment. But being a shoobie, he has no perspective on travel time. To him, it's all "down the shore." Go back to Philly, please. We don't want you here. It's bad enough your kind colonize so much of South Jersey in the summer, now we have you killing off our churches and schools. Well ya know what? They ain't yours to take. It's theft.

By the way, nice work Trudi Gilfillian, journalist for The Press, for the balanced reporting. We should note, though, that although there are quotes from the diocese within the article claiming lowering enrollment and financial problems, we know from our experience that their numbers are NEVER, ever to be believed. Just about every time we've checked them here at savestmarys, they've been completely erronious (search our websites many articles to see). Anyone can cook the books, and they need to in order to justify their actions, so keep a critical mind.

Rumor turned to reality Tuesday when students and staff learned that Wildwood Catholic High School will close for good by June 30.

Principal Richard Turco said he gathered the school's 194 students together early in the day, holding a copy of Tuesday's edition of The Press of Atlantic City, which featured a story reporting declining enrollment was threatening the high school's future.

Turco told the students he didn't know if those rumors were true.

A short while later, Father Mike Field and Father Joseph Wallace met with Turco at the school and delivered the news to him.

"I was stunned. I felt my daughter, my father, my mother all died on the same day. It is very much like a death in the family," Turco said.

Several hours later, Turco gathered the students together a second time and told them the school was closing.

"It was just very sad," said Jake Martin, 14, a freshman who like his classmates had always planned to graduate from Wildwood Catholic. "I am very upset. I don't know where I'll go."

Andrew Walton, spokesman for the Diocese of Camden, said the diocese is coming up with a plan to provide transportation to Holy Spirit in Absecon, Atlantic County, for Cape May County families who opt to send their children there.

The announcement at Wildwood Catholic left most stunned and some in tears. A teacher cried as she told a reporter news of the closing had been confirmed.

"We have to pick different schools now," said Ryan Malinowski, also 14 and a freshman, who attends the school along with her 15-year-old brother Thomas, a sophomore.

Their friend, 14-year-old Peter Yecco, summed up the group's feelings quite simply. "I think it sucks," he said.

Lizanne Martin, Ryan and Thomas' mother, was waiting for her children after school as she normally does.

She had not heard the rumors of a closing, so Tuesday's announcement was that much more surprising.

Martin graduated from Wildwood Catholic in 1985 and expected her children would do the same.

"It's very important they graduate from here," she said.

Father Field, pastor of St. Ann's parish, said late Tuesday that the decision to close was not an easy one, but finances and an ever-declining enrollment made it unavoidable.

"This is emotionally wrenching. We're dealing with people's lives," Field said. "It is very painful."

Field said that at the start of the 2009-10 school year the school anticipated having 233 students on its rolls. Instead, there were 194, a drop expected to continue as Cape May County's school-age population declines.

Walton said enrollment peaked at 376 in the 1999-2000 school year. The school can hold as many as 400 students.

Lower enrollment also means less money coming in from tuition.

"The enrollment is half your capacity, but you still have to staff it and offer programs as if fully-enrolled," Walton said.

While the school falls under the purview of the diocese, its funding comes only from tuition payments - $6,280 for a family's first child and $5,980 for each additional child - and the support of parishioners from St. Ann's in Wildwood and the Assumption Church in Wildwood Crest.

Walton said it costs more than $2 million per year to operate the high school, which first opened in September 1948.

The enrollment decline has resulted in falling revenues, resulting in a growing debt of more than $685,000 and annual deficits which are expected to top $500,000 this year and almost $900,000 next year, a burden that is weighing on both the school and its sponsoring parishes, Walton said.

Father Field, citing "insurmountable troubles," said the decision followed a period of study and review with Bishop Joseph Galante and his school advisers.

"Given the gravity of the enrollment decline and the dire financial situation, and trends indicating a worsening situation," he said, "and having considered the reality that neither the diocese nor the parish can afford the increasing debt of the high school, we have concluded that it is necessary for Wildwood Catholic High School to close at the end of this school year."

Father Field, in his letter to parents, said that families who decide to send their children to Holy Spirit or another diocesan high school will receive a tuition voucher of $1,000 per student.

He also wrote that "we will work to place faculty and staff in other Catholic schools, and, for those who do not secure employment, we will offer a severance package."

Turco said there will be no school today to give everyone a chance to cope.

Social studies teacher Tim O'Brien, a union representative for the Catholic Teachers Union, said reaction among the staff to the closing announcement was "stunned silence, disbelief."

"You hear about family and community. We truly live that here," O'Brien said. "We know we put out a good product."

O'Brien has two children who attend the school.

"I am in absolute denial," he said.

Denial was one of the many emotions parents such as Crystal Hardin, of Cape May, were dealing with Tuesday. She has five children, three attending Our Lady Star of the Sea and one at Wildwood Catholic. Her eldest son attends St. Augustine College Preparatory School in Buena Vista Township.

"I went through a Catholic education. It's a tradition, and once your family is in it, you want to keep it," she said.

Hardin attributed the closure to poor business planning and urged more to be done to encourage new students to enroll.

"This is going to be devastating," she said.

Hardin said she would likely send her daughter to Holy Spirit High School in Absecon.

Karen L. Mangold, of Cape May Court House, sent two of her children to Wildwood Catholic and now sends her son to Westminster Christian Academy, a small school in Ocean City.

The school, which offers instruction three days per week, charges about $2,000 per year, compared to Wildwood Catholic's $6,280 tuition bill.

"Tuition is outrageous," Mangold said, explaining her reasons for picking an alternative school.

George Corwell, director of education for the New Jersey Catholic Conference, said Tuesday that the nation's economic situation is contributing to declining enrollment in many nonpublic schools.

Since 2007, the number of students enrolled in the state's nonpublic schools has dropped from 180,000 to 172,000, according to state budget data. About 120,000 students of those students are enrolled in one of New Jersey's 280 Catholic schools.

Corwell was appointed in December by Gov. Jon S. Corzine as co-chair of the Non-Public Education Funding Commission to recommend how nonpublic schools and the state can better use increasingly limited funds.

He pointed to affluent communities in Bergen County where former Wall Street executives are taking their children out of private schools because they can no longer afford them.

"We're doing everything we can to convince the parents that this is a good investment for their children," Corwell said.

But parent Mary Beth McNally, of North Wildwood, said parents already do all they can to give their children the Catholic education they want them to have.

"It's expensive, but I cut back on other things to keep him here," she said of her 16-year-old son, Jimmy.

The loss of the high school will go beyond its walls.

City Council President Patrick Rosenello, who graduated from Wildwood Catholic in 1991, said the school is very much a part of the town.

"It's a very sad day for the community," he said. "The school is part of the fabric of the community."

Rosenello said he understood the disappointment and hurt the students and their families are feeling.

The only bright spot, he said, is news that the diocese will move its new combined grammar school, Cape Trinity, into the high school building, keeping the facility open in some capacity.

Father Field and Father Wallace who will operate the soon-to-be merged parish Notre Dame de la Mer, said the school will house the grammar school students who previously attended St. Raymond's in Lower Township, St. Ann's in Wildwood and Our Lady Star of the Sea in Cape May as well as a parish office and ministry center.

Parent Nick Nastasi, of Wildwood Crest, has been a vocal opponent of the plan to merge St. Ann's in Wildwood with the Assumption Church in Wildwood Crest, and he pointed to the closing of the high school as another error being made by the diocese and Bishop Galante.

"Closing the high school, the only Catholic high school in Cape May County, is ludicrous," Nastasi said.

Finally a half-way decent article from Jim Walsh. St. Vincent Pallotti is continuing the fight.

Lay leaders at the Haddon Township parish, recently rebuffed in an appeal to a Vatican body, now plan to take their case to a church court, the group said in a statement.

The parishioners also said they want the Vatican to decide whether the planned merger with St. Aloysius Parish can be put on hold pending their appeal. They described that issue as "unresolved."

But Andrew Walton, a spokesman for the Diocese of Camden, said "preparatory steps related to the merger will continue."

"Church law is clear," he said, asserting the parishioners' appeal "does not result in an automatic suspension of the intended merger."

In saying this, Mr. Walton is, of course, mistaken. If a church's appeal is pending, the "merger" process should be put on hold. The equivalent would be sentencing a person accused person before the jury returns with a verdict.

The Haddon Township parishioners last year filed an appeal, or recourse, with the Congregation of the Clergy. In a response last month, the Vatican body indicated Galante already had addressed the lay leaders' concerns, when the bishop in August 208 said St. Vincent Pallotti church would continue as a worship site after the merger.

But the lay leaders said they want the merged parish to have its seat at St. Vincent Pallotti church, which has undergone capital improvements worth some $1 million. Galante has said St. Aloysius will be the seat.

"The parishioners of St. Vincent Pallotti do not feel that the object of this recourse (to the Congregation) has been fulfilled, nor even addressed," the lay leaders said.

"This matter has been forwarded to the Apostolic Signatura, the Court of the Church, to initiate the appeal process," they added.

At the diocese, Walton said the Congregation's decision stated the choice of a parish seat was up to Galante. He said the Apostolic Signatura typically determines "whether the Congregation's decision-making process was in keeping with church law."

Walton also said the Haddon Township parishioners were "well within their rights" in pursuing an appeal.

"Bishop Galante believes these individuals are not only within their rights, but are motivated by sincerity, goodwill and a great love for their parish and the church," Walton said.

Of course, this begs the question, if Friends of SVP are motivated by "goodwill and a great love for their parish and the Church," what is the Bishop and those cooperating with him motivated by???

1. This bishop must be stopped.

2. What else is the Bishop going to say? He is never going to admit he was wrong. I personnally see no hope for the parishioners. The Bishop will continue to throw Church Law and Doctine at the people and hope something sticks. The Catholic church is nothing more than a business. When will the members of the Catholic church realize they are only a consumer of a service and they truly do not have a say or a "real ownership" in "their" church? At one time, you could say the Church was out for the "good" of the people and respected the parishioners. Today, it appears they are out for their agenda. With the continuous arrogance shown by the Pope and the Vatican, the Church is no better than Wall Street or politicians who want everything for themselves. If the Bishop respected the parishioners, he would have asked the parishioners to determine the "seat" and only stepped if a consensus was not arrived at.
St. John Vianney parishioners, our prayers are with you. It is time to again stand up and voice your opposition to this evil act. Do what is necessary to make your position clear.

Here is the [poor] Courier Post article in which they mislead the reader by making it appear that St. John Vianney* is much younger than it is. Also, notice how idiotic and deceptive the reasoning is. The CP only speaks to core team members, not to those unhappy with the loss of their parish. Anyone who thinks that people in the diocese, much less SJV parisihoners, are "accepting" and in favor of this merger plan is deluding themselves.

In case you haven't already guessed, St. John Vianney is a beautiful little country parish. It is small, old, and traditional. No wonder the bishop wants it gone.

It is sad that its pastor, a priest we happen to like very much, has not supported his parishioners and the rights of the parish to its existance as stipulated by canon law and Church history. This has been the case throughout the diocese. Some care too much for the stability of their status and their standing with the bishop and not enough for the tending of their flock and standing in opposition to that which is overtly wrong.

They hope to "get people back" by closing their parish??? What kind of reasoning is that? The only people who buy this line of reasoning are some on the core teams. By doing this, they are effectively slamming the door in the face to those who ever thought of returning to the Church, but that's just as well to Galante, who has a "new church" in mind that bears little resemblance to the Church we know. The parishes -- St. Margaret in Woodbury Heights and St. John Vianney in Deptford -- are to merge Jan. 13, Galante said. The new parish will be called Infant Jesus....

The merged parish, with its seat in Woodbury Heights, will serve 3,300 families. It will be led by the Rev. Joseph T. Szolack, the current pastor of St. Margaret's.

St. John Vianney Church will serve as a worship site "as needed by the new parish," the diocese said in a statement.

St. Margaret's Parish was founded in 1961 during a period of suburban growth in Woodbury Heights. St. John Vianney became a parish in 1971.

Merger preparations began in November 2008 when a "core team," with members from each parish, held an initial meeting with Szolack. Parish members since that time have worshipped together and shared social activities, such as a carnival and pancake breakfasts, the diocese said.

"Initially there was some uncertainty as to how this would all work," said Mark Cipolone, a core team member from St. Margaret's. "Now, parishioners are accepting and looking to moving forward."

Cipolone acknowledged a desire to see the survival of St. Margaret's, which was founded in 1961, and St. John Vianney, a parish since 1971.

"Given the realities, we have to do it," he said. "We have to get people to come back."

Galante's announcement came two days after the merger of three parishes in Camden County. Those parishes -- St. Luke in Stratford, St. Lawrence in Lindenwold and Our Lady of Grace in Somerdale -- are now Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish.

The next merger is to take effect Dec. 23, when two Cherry Hill parishes -- St. Pius X and Holy Rosary -- are to become Holy Eucharist Parish.

So far, 17 parishes have merged since late July, reducing the diocesan total by nine.

Geographically, how do they justify elderly parish members that live in Deptford traveling to Woodbury Heights? It is not around the corner!! This is one of many reasons I have left my catholic background. There is no thought to the people just to the politics!!

* The SJV website has been significantly downsized from what it once was. It was once one of the best church websites in the diocese. Guess they were told to downsize it to only the absolutely essential information. Are the parishioners being told it's time to roll over and die?

This was originally posted January 31, 2009. We thought it was worth republishing.

Catholic theology and Church teaching are not accidental. Holy Mother Church teaches unchanging, eternal Truths. Moreover, these Truths are all connected and interconnected. Like all systems, each Truth depends upon the other; they are the structures that support the building. We do not, after all, have an atomistic system wherein one truth may stand up as a pillar without the others. Generally speaking, it is not possible, nor is it logical, to accept one teaching of the Catholic Church and dispense with the others, as if one was unrelated to the next. Once we begin to do this, the structure loses its supports and comes tumbling down.

Take, for example, our church buildings and chapels. They are designed for the worship of Christ, the King of the Universe. They are supposed to give us a glimpse of heaven. They are to surround us with examples of how we should live (depictions of the lives of Christ and the saints), who we are and were designed to be (holy sons and daughters of Our Lord), and the physical and spiritual means of getting there.

As Catholics, we believe that Christ is truly and physically present in the Holy Sacrifice of the Altar and that his Eucharistic Presence resides in the Tabernacle. If the King of the Universe resides in the Tabernacle, it only makes sense that that Tabernacle be located in a prominent place, front and center.

If the King of the Universe in the Tabernacle is located front and center in our churches, it only makes sense that we reverently face Him. If the King of the Universe is located in the Tabernacle, front and center, and we are all facing His Majesty, it only makes sense that we be able to kneel before Him in humility and out of love and devotion to Him.

If we truly believe that Jesus Christ, King and Redeemer of our fallen race has come to be with us sacramentally in the Holy Eucharist and that He resides in our Catholic churches, then our souls and minds ought to be elevated, our whole selves reminded of Him while we are in church, whether mass is going on or not. Throughout most of human history, people have not been literate, and even today we need reminders of what it means to live the Christian life. God allows us to use our senses to know Him. To glorify God and for the help of our souls, we are given works of art in the form of paintings, stained glass windows, statues, and other things within our churches.

Consider this. When you have a guest coming to your house, you clean up. You make ready. You prepare. If you were to have an "important" guest come to your house, you would want it to look good. In this case we have an important guest--the most important Guest possible, our Creator--coming to be with us, so great is His love for us. We should want all around us to remind us of His loving and sacrificial Presence.

Says the Catholic Church of England and Wales:

A Church for us is more than a building - it is a Sacred Space, filled with God's presence. Everything within that space - the paintings, the statues, the stained glass - exists for a spiritual purpose.

This is to provide people with a focus for prayer and an insight into God: literally a 'glimpse of heaven'. The word 'Patrimony' describes the Church's cultural inheritance in terms of architecture, art and artefacts. All witness to our Catholic past: a history of persecution, struggle and ultimately, revival. We are just custodians, with a duty to preserve these sacred treasures for the future. Today we also create the Patrimony of tomorrow by commissioning high quality Sacred art.

But now, after roughly two thousand years of Holy Mother Church teaching us
  • about the sacredness the church building,
  • about how we must be ever vigilant of the possibility of sacrilege not only personally but also in our churches and shrines,
  • about how Our Lord would be with us even until the end of time both spiritually and in the Holy Eucharist in our churches and sacred places,
  • about Christians sacrificing all they had materially and even their own lives for the sake of their holy churches erection and continuation,
  • to fall on our knees before God in our beloved churches,
now, in late twentieth and early twenty-first century America we are told to believe that our churches are "just buildings" and we ought not be attached to them. I don't know about you, but my mother taught me when I was just a child that this is one of the most important things that distinguishes us as Catholics from the protestants: our churches are open because we believe that they are holy places, that Our Lord is there, and that they are not just buildings. My mother was no liar.

Places where Our Lord has come to us sacramentally in His unbloody sacrifice, day after day after day, we are now told to believe are buildings like any other. That isn't Catholicism. That is materialism. And that, my friends, is precisely what the devil himself would have us believe. To believe our churches are only buildings would be to deny Our Lord's Eucharistic Presence, our ultimate and eternal destiny, and that for which we were created--the worship of God. In fact, to claim that our churches are just buildings would be to deny our spiritual nature, the indwelling of the Holy Ghost, and even our sacred baptisms and confirmations. To claim that our churches are just buildings is to deny the validity of their consecrations and blessings. To claim that our churches are just buildings is an insidious lie. And a lie is a lie no matter who says it.

By a decree of the Council of Trent (Sess. XXII), Mass should not be celebrated in any place except a consecrated or blessed church. Hence it is the wish of the Church that at least cathedrals and parish churches be solemnly consecrated, and that smaller churches be blessed (Cong. Sac. Rit., 7 Aug., 1875), but any church and public or semi-public oratory may be consecrated (Cong. Sac. Rit., 5 June, 1899). Both by consecration and by blessing a church is dedicated to Divine worship, which forbids its use for common or profane purposes. Consecration is a rite reserved to a bishop, who by the solemn anointing with holy chrism, and in the prescribed form, dedicates a building to the service of God, thereby raising it in perpetuum to a higher order, removing it from the malign influence of Satan, and rendering it a place in which favours are more graciously granted by God (Pontificale Romanum).  (From New Advent, the Catholic Encyclopedia.)

In the past, Catholics and Catholic buildings alike have been the targets of hatred and persecution. I need not list the litany of specific examples, but priests have been tarred and feathered, buildings blown up, altars desecrated, the Sacred Body of Our Lord maligned, churches vandalized. The history of anti-Catholicism in this country is well-documented and is, in fact, alive and well today. Of course in this country Catholics not even permitted to run for public office (and even when they were, there was serious doubt about their "patriotism"). Catholics have experienced horrible persecution in this and other countries, and by extension our houses of worship desecrated in the worst possible ways. Suffice it to say that many of you have likely heard the stories of your own ancestors and what they went through to preserve the faith, or even just to get to mass. I know I grew up hearing these stories of perseverance in the Faith, and my own family sacrificed much and for that I am so proud and so grateful. It is a great privilege to be born into a good Catholic family and to receive the benefits of our patrimony. The fruit of all that sacrifice is made real to us by virtue of worshiping in the places bequeathed to us by our ancestors and by the grace of God.

These are St. Mary's founders, none of them rich and all hard working,
whose donations are listed down to the penny in a framed document
near the church's entryway. These are the generous souls who
sacrificed so that we may have a church to worship in. St. Mary's is
unique in the sense that just about everything in (and out of) the church
was and is bought, paid for, and maintained by members over the years.

It is amazing that at this point in American Catholic history, instead of the Catholic Church being the object of hostile attacks from without, our church buildings and even the Church itself is being attacked from within. Sadly, our shepherds are leading their sheep astray, and many souls will be lost. Instead of protecting our churches, our patrimony, they are being closed (and often the contents sold on ebay) and when faithful Catholics hold tight to the timeless teachings of their Faith, they are called all manner of things from "disobedient" to "unchristian" and worse. Sometimes these attacks are leveled, shamefully, by their own priests and bishops. Yes, many of the very bishops who

  • harbored child abusers, shuffling them from one parish to the next
  • affiliate themselves and do business with the likes of criminals who would steal churches and schools right out from under unsuspecting Catholics
  • allow the rampant sexual impropriety of priests in their diocese
  • advocate such unorthodox doctrine as married, gay, and "womyn" priests; as well as downplay of the sacrificial nature of the mass and many other things
  • repeatedly lie to the faithful in matters ranging from real estate transactions to canon law to theological Truth
  • justify closing churches by claiming there's a "priest shortage" and then persecuting and sending away priests by the dozen...
...yes, some of the very same bishops would be so blind and arrogant as to criticize the faithful Catholics who merely want to worship their Lord and Savior in the manner they always have: in their own churches. This is an outrage, and it should not be tolerated by any thinking Catholic.

This is just one example of what we have to look forward to if the
likes of Bishop Galante and Marilyn Vollmer get their way. The
"priest shortage" red herring has been used as an excuse to
justify all manner of practices, from church closures to major
church, umm, "redecorations." I suppose in this day and age
this church could be considered "fortunate" to have survived
at all and to have a statue of our Blessed Mother still within it.

Sadly, it doesn't seem that they kneel anymore, but I
bet they hold hands a lot.

perfect Mother to be our Mother, too! Do we pack it in now, or do we continue to live that sacrifice in our own lives? Our Lord gave us our churches. He gave them to us for a very good reason: so that we could worship Him! He entrusted them to us that we may be good stewards of his holy Houses. We are called to lives of grace and sanctity, and we are called to defend the Faith by virtue of our baptism. We are to defend the Faith from all who attack it, whether the attackers be outside the Church or within it. Remember, St. John Bosco assures us that when the Church is battered by enemies from within or from without, salvation can only come from JESUS IN THE EUCHARIST; MARY, THE HELP OF CHRISTIANS; and THE POPE, the vicar of Christ on earth.

Here's a letter to the editor from Diocese of Camden spinmaster, Andy Walton. Don't laugh right away, read it first.

Re: "Do not care" (letters, Aug. 27).
The letter writer from Magnolia,St. Gregory Roman Catholic Church whose struggling parish is merging with two nearby parishes, suggested that Bishop Joseph Galante, his priest advisers, deanery planning teams, planning commission and Core Teams "do not care" about the pain being felt by parishioners when their parishes merge.

The feelings of loss that accompany change of this kind are not being ignored. In fact, unlike other dioceses that have moved far more quickly with parish reconfigurations, the bishop insisted there be a period of 12 to 24 months before he issued decrees formally establishing new parishes. He did this in recognition of the sense of loss he knew would be experienced and to give parishes adequate time to prepare to come together.

During this time, he has heard personally from parishioners in every part of the diocese and has acknowledged the disappointment many naturally feel. The fact is, if he didn't care, he would not be taking steps to address the needs of Catholics in South Jersey. If he didn't care, he wouldn't be working to reverse downward trends in religious practice.

The fact is, it is precisely because the bishop cares so deeply about the well-being of parishioners and because of his great love for the Church and the people of South Jersey that he has undertaken the effort now under way to strengthen parishes and improve care to the people.

Andy's talking about the beautiful St. Gregory's (above) in Magnolia. Galante, McGrath, and Walton "care" so much they seem to have sold the property to Wawa. Who do they think they're fooling? We've got pictures of the surveyors sent to us by a concerned reader back last Christmas. Money talks, and to the tune of 10 million dollars, apparently. Empathy my foot. It's prime real estate.

"Downward trends in religious practice":
As to the misleading demographic information continually touted by Mr. Walton, we've addressed it numerous times. It's lies. Just look here and here and here. All you have to do is look on a map to see where Magnolia is to know that the Catholic population in that area can only be expanding, not decreasing. We're not talking rural Fairton, Cumberland County here or Dennis Township, Cape May County. We're talking close proximity to Philadelphia in a congested, continually expanding area of South Jersey.

The plain fact is that the Catholic population in NJ and in South Jersey in particular is dramatically increasing. In fact the Catholic population in NJ has increased by at least 2.5% since 1990, by roughly 100,000 people. In Gloucester County alone we're looking at a Catholic increase of at least 20% since 1990. The Catholic population is only decreasing in South Jersey's only true urban centers, Camden and Atlantic City, as illustrated below:

"Reversing Downward Trends":
Do they really care about reversing supposed downward trends or about justifying their own agenda? If all they care about is giving people what they want, they should stop watering down the Faith and desiring to build protestant style megachurches. And if they are truly targeting young adults, as they should, this group wants one of two things, neither of which the Diocese of Camden is offering: (1) an authentic and unapologetic Christianity, or (2) at the very least, clarity and a lack of hypocrisy. This is why you see the most traditional churches and religious orders growing. Alternately those who are leaving the Church are leaving for a protestantism whose Christianity is clear and faith exacting. Others who leave leave the Faith and stay away out of disgust for the likes of people like Walton and others who pretend religion but in reality have nothing but political motives. We addressed this patronizing attitude just the other day. So we quote ourselves!
They have spewed psychobabble pertaining to the alleged difficulty that we, the laity have coping with change. This kind of patronizing dribble is without merit because it fails to address the purpose of the change and merely holds up "change" as having inherent value. This type of rhetoric attempts to put the Catholic faithful on the defensive, as if we have to prove our ability to healthily cope with change by accepting the destruction of our parishes. The question remains, is the change we are expected to embrace a change toward the Good, toward God's Will, toward God Himself? What are we supposed to be changing to?

And, apparently, listened to few of them. Go ahead and ask St. Gregory's how "listened to" they're feeling right about now. They got "listened" right into closure.

Since it's well-known, at least among people in Vineland, that Bishop Galante has long wanted to close the historic and beautiful Sacred Heart (roughly the size of the cathedral in Camden), which outrages many (myself included since this is the church of my ancestors), this is no great surprise. In fact, it's the oldest trick in the book. One way of messing with a group's identity is to remove its long-standing leader. While Fr. Amabile's mother is apparently sick, (may the Lord bless her,) that seems a very convenient thing for the Galante administration.

What's still so surprising is that a native Vinelander, Msgr. John Burton, would continue to work with Galante in achieving this end. Shame! (One wonders, is it all about getting ahead and making brownie points?)

His departure would not affect Galante's plan to cut 124 parishes in the diocese down to 68, Walton said. Sacred Heart Parish and St. Isidore the Farmer Parish on Magnolia Road will merge under the plan, with St. Isidore assuming primary worship duties.
It seems to be most people's assumption that since St. Isidore's on Magnolia has so much land, Galante plans to use it to create his gigantic Vineland, evangelical protestant-style megachurch on that spot. But I suppose a traditional and beautiful Catholic church, no matter the size or history, does not serve the bishop's purposes.

Besides all that, closing Sacred Heart would rip the soul out of what is left of downtown Vineland. What a way to build "community" and help the less fortunate--to move the main Vineland parish to the burbs.

It would seem appropriate at this time to thank the Augustinian Order, in all seriousness and sincerity, for helping us in South Jersey by sending us priests for all these years. They have been a great blessing, and continue to to be, even, as Fr. Marty Smith referred to them, as "rent-a-priests" when parishes are in a pinch. We thank you!

Sacred Heart pastor moving on to N.Y. post

VINELAND -- After nine years, the Rev. Patsy Amabile has celebrated a number of Masses at Sacred Heart Parish.

His last could come later this month.

Amabile is headed to a parish in West Islip, Long Island, N.Y., if he receives approval from Diocese of Camden Bishop Joseph A. Galante. The 67-year-old requested the move so he could be closer to his ailing mother.

Amabile would, at least temporarily, serve as pastor for Our Lady of Lourdes. He plans on returning to his "home diocese" in the future.

"As pastor, you become somewhat connected with the parishioners, and I will miss them and the friends I have made," he said.

Amabile would be taking a position within the Dioceses of Rockville Centre starting Sept. 1, Diocese of Camden spokesman Andrew Walton said.

His departure would not affect Galante's plan to cut 124 parishes in the diocese down to 68, Walton said.

Sacred Heart Parish and St. Isidore the Farmer Parish on Magnolia Road will merge under the plan, with St. Isidore assuming primary worship duties.

Monsignor John Burton of St. Isidore is the priest convener who is working with a core team of representatives from both parishes to prepare for the merger, Walton said.

"In this time of transition -- which I know they will be going through -- I know they will be in good hands," Amabile said.

Amabile requested the special transfer about five months ago so he could move closer to his 94-year-old, mother, who is living in a nursing home on Long Island.

"I think she needs me to help her while she's in the home," he said.

Amabile has been with the Camden Diocese for 19 years and a pastor at Sacred Heart for nine years.

His last day is Aug. 31, but the parish scheduled a farewell Mass and dinner on Aug. 21.

"He was our spiritual leader for almost a decade," said Frank Guaracini Jr., a deacon and lifelong member with the parish. "He is very kind and compassionate. He offered comfort and spiritual guidance to those who needed it, and I wish him well."

The parish is hosting farewell coffees this month for Amabile and the Rev. Martin Smith, an Augustinian who occasionally presided over services at Sacred Heart.

"He was very likable," Guaracini said of Smith. "He's been filling in for many, many years when other priests were not available."

Smith also will be leaving the area to take on a new role with the Augustinian Order and care for the elderly religious in Villanova, Pa., Walton said.

[The following article is drawn from legal opinions and pleadings in the files of the St. Joseph Foundation. The primary contributor is Duane Galles. The editing and a small portion of the text is Charles M. Wilson's and he accepts full responsibility for any flaws.]

We know that Christ's Church is not a democracy and we acknowledge that those who exercise the ministry of governance are not accountable to those they govern. We understand also that the faithful are obliged to follow whatever legitimate authorities determine as leaders of the Church, but the above two citations--and lots of others which could be used--tell us quite a lot about the way in which ecclesiastical authority should be exercised. Unfortunately, there have been times during the 2,000 year history of our Church when these principles have been honored more in the breach than the observance. Perhaps the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council had this in mind when they said:

"By the power of the Holy Spirit the Church is the faithful spouse of the Lord and will never fail to be a sign of salvation in the world; but it is by no means unaware that down through the centuries there have been among its members, both clerical and lay, some who were disloyal to the Spirit of God. Today, as well, the Church is not blind to the discrepancy between the message it proclaims and the human weakness of those to whom the Gospel has been entrusted. Whatever is history's judgment on these shortcomings, we cannot ignore them and we must combat them earnestly, lest they hinder the spread of the Gospel" (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, <Gaudium et Spes>, No. 43).

When we think about this, most of us will recall those sad moments in history when priests, bishops and even some popes were guilty of grossly scandalous conduct and showed themselves to be unworthy of their offices.

But we might also consider those times when Church leaders exhibited other less spectacular weaknesses such as capriciousness, arrogance, cruelty, duplicity, intransigence and authoritarianism. When linked to conditions which have frequently permitted the exercise of power with unrestrained discretion on the part of ecclesiastical authorities, we can rightly wonder if these flaws have not over time caused more harm to the Church and the loss of more souls than the excesses of the likes of John XII, Benedict IX and Alexander VI. It is this exercise of discretionary authority by bishops or their bureaucrats which has resulted in recent heated controversies over many issues, prominent among them being--especially in the United States and Canada--the renovation of parish church buildings and the closure of parishes.

Before proceeding to the consideration of these particular issues, it would be worthwhile to take just a glance at how episcopal discretion has been exercised in the United States and those parts of Canada where English is the predominant language. Going back to the end of the eighteenth century, we see that both had very few Catholics and that, coupled with the difficulties in communication, resulted in Rome taking a more or less "out of sight, out of mind" attitude. In sum, the day-to-day governance of the dioceses was, for better or worse, left almost entirely in the hands of the bishops.

Anyone who holds a position of authority, subject only to a distant and not overly concerned higher authority, is tempted to exercise power not in a spirit of service but often arbitrarily and sometimes abusively. We see an example of this in the nineteenth century when the American bishops, at the First Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1829, attempted by decree to overstate the obligation of obedience of diocesan priests to their bishops and, in effect, reduce them to the condition of religious priests with respect to their superiors. Although, thankfully, the Holy See did intervene to suppress that decree, the bishops resourcefully employed other means to achieve the same end.

Throughout the nineteenth century, the American bishops refused to erect canonical parishes and thereby prevented diocesan priests from acquiring the rights and security of tenure conferred on pastors by the universal law of the Church. Unlike priests in the Catholic countries of Europe, their American counterparts were canonically merely rectors of missions with delegated instead of ordinary powers which could be withdrawn at the pleasure of the bishops.

Indeed, then, the power of the American bishop over his clergy was awesome. He could appoint, remove, transfer and discipline them at will. He controlled their compensation and regulated their lifestyle to an extent and in a manner that no European bishop would have dared. The situation was such that even Pope Pius IX could joke about it. When asked one day by a supplicant for a favor, the pontiff reportedly replied: "What you ask is not in my power to grant, but there is an American bishop in town. Go ask him!"

Another contributing element was the fact that not only were the American bishops subject to little restraint by the Holy See, they were not subject to the type of influence which certain civil authorities could employ in Europe. Centuries of intricate relations between state and Church on that continent resulted in many constraints upon ecclesiastical authority that were never implemented in North America. One example was the right of presentation, or the right of civil governments to propose candidates for Church offices. Even the election of popes could be influenced, as happened in this very century when the Emperor of Austria exercised his right of veto and blocked the election of Cardinal Rampolla as pope in 1903.

An important and beneficial change took place with the promulgation of the 1917 Code of Canon Law, which instantly transformed the "missions" in North America into canonical parishes and thereby transformed their "rectors" into pastors, with all the protections of the law. An even more sweeping change flowed from the ecclesiology of Vatican II, which reemphasized the notion of authority as a ministry of service rather than one of power.

We see this reformed ecclesiology made present in the law in several ways. In 1967 Pope Paul VI in his apostolic constitution, <Regimini Ecclesiae Universae,> created the Second Section of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura to enforce the rights of Christ's faithful even against public ecclesiastical authorities. Sixteen years later, the revised Code of Canon Law, in contrast to its predecessor, codified the rights and duties of the faithful. Perhaps the most important of the 1752 canons in the new Code is number 128, which states that "Anyone who unlawfully inflicts damage upon someone by a juridic act, or indeed by any other act placed with malice or culpability, is obliged to compensate for the damage inflicted." This means that the arbitrary and capricious use of discretionary power is no longer acceptable under the 1983 Code.

The Effects Of The Reforms

While the reforms of Vatican II and the 1983 Code look good on paper, the sad fact is that one can see few positive changes on the parish and diocesan level. Aside from the historical reality that change sometimes takes place very slowly in the Church, our conclusion is that there are three reasons for this: (1) Since Vatican II, the concept of "collegiality" has become something of an obsession and the Holy See has been extremely reluctant to interfere-even when there are good reasons to do so-in diocesan affairs. (2) Too many bishops in the United States and Canada have allowed their authority to be undermined by "experts" on their staffs. (3) The canon 221, 3 of the 1983 Code stated that the "Christian faithful can legitimately vindicate and defend the rights which they enjoy in the Church before a competent ecclesiastical court in accord with the norm of law," but the Code says very little as to how this theoretical right can be put into practice.

There are others who have come to similar conclusions, not all of whom may share our theological views. One, for example, was Fr. Joseph A. Komonchak, Associate Professor of Religion and Religious Education at the Catholic University of America, who said;

"More than a few lay people have noted that their rights to participation in the Church have not always been better respected by the addition to the traditional clerical hierarchy of a new and larger body of "professionals" and "experts". It is an occupational hazard of bureaucrats to believe that they know better than the people in the field how things should be done. And if they turn to management theories elaborated for business and government for ideas on how to plan for the Church's future, it is not surprising to hear complaints that the Church appears much more like a giant and impersonal organization than like a living community of brothers and sisters-a complaint, by the way, that by no means is aimed only at episcopal or papal targets" (<Origins>, April 2, 1987, p. 378).

A prominent American canonist has added a legal dimension to Fr. Komonchak's observation and applied it to parishes, which are often the victims of those "professionals" and "experts."

"Parishes and other local congregations are not branch offices or local outlets of a central corporation, like banks or auto agencies or service stations. They are unique communities of Christian people. They are authentic Churches, just like those described in the New Testament (in Jerusalem, in Antioch, in Corinth, in Ephesus), and they must be respected as such. The Church is "built up from below" by these local communities of God's people...

Sometimes the impression is given that the parishes exist for the sake of the diocese, when just the opposite is true. The organization and governance of the Church is most often stated and interpreted by those in diocesan offices. They subtly begin to believe that their functions are primary, and that they represent the first and most important level of the Church's life' since they are more immediately related to the bishop's authority. They gradually come to consider parish communities as derivative and secondary, almost as managerial units. They speak of planning for "clusters of parishes" or "pastoral zones of the diocese" (meaning that they are preparing to suppress or merge parishes) and of reorganizing local communities for reasons of more efficient use of personnel and financial resources. [In a footnote, the author adds, Economy and efficiency are praiseworthy, but the dignity and quality of local communities is even more important. Ed.] They relate to the local churches in the same ways that corporate executives of Safeway and McDonalds relate to their local stores.

No one is baptized in a chancery office. People enter the Church, grow in faith, give praise to God, and lend loving assistance to their neighbors in parishes and other local communities. These local congregations of the faithful have a proper and authentic autonomy which must be respected> ("The Vindication of Parish Rights," by James A. Coriden, <The Jurist> 54 (1994), pp. 23-24).

Much more along these same lines could be said, but we believe Frs. Komonchak and Coriden have adequately and fairly summarized, for the purposes of this discussion, the atmosphere that prevails in the majority of dioceses in North America.

Renovation Of Church Buildings

We must admit that church buildings are places of worship, not museums, and that hardly any, including St. Peter's Basilica, never undergo some changes. Even so, the many "horror stories" in our case files and those we have seen elsewhere confirm that most "renovations" go far beyond--and in some cases are even contrary to--the legal norms. And this is not a problem that has arisen recently. Almost twenty five years ago, the Holy See issued the following sound advice: "<Mindful of the legislation of Vatican Council II and of the directives in the documents of the Holy See, bishops are to exercise unfailing vigilance to ensure that the remodeling of places of worship is carried out with the utmost caution>" (Congregation for Clergy, Circular Letter <Opera artis>, April 11, 1971).

Virtually all renovation projects are grounded in what the parishioners are told are the needs of the reformed Vatican II liturgy. In fact, they are often motivated by erroneous interpretations of liturgical law arising from the Council's Constitution on the Liturgy, <Sacrosanctum concilium> (SC). Three key concepts of SC, it seems, are commonly misinterpreted and misapplied. This, in turn, has motivated the iconoclasm and destruction of so much cultural church property in the United States and Canada.

The first key concept which has been misinterpreted and misapplied is <participatio actuosa> of SC. It has been mistranslated as "active participation" which, in English, can imply that for participation to be genuine it must involve physical activity. For a proper understanding of the phrase, one can paraphrase the original Latin of the 1958 instruction, <De musica sacra>, to say that participation ought to be internal and, certainly, exercised with a spirit of piety and heartfelt affection. Given this understanding of the concept, "actual participation" might be a more accurate translation. In any event, the liturgical "establishment's" understanding has had pernicious consequences, such as the attentive assistance at Mass and participation in the changes in posture or responses being dismissed by some liturgists as inadequate. Thus, communion rails are destroyed, altars thrust forward like theaters-in-the-round, statues are removed and the Blessed Sacrament banished, since their presence would inhibit a maximum of activity, which inevitably deteriorates into mere busyness.

The second concept misinterpreted is that of <nobilis pulchritudo> (noble beauty) of Article 124 of SC, which has often been translated as "noble simplicity." In the name of "simplicity," altars have been smashed, statues trashed, paintings whitewashed, organs silenced and the ignoble--burlap vestments and crude ceramic vessels, for example--introduced into the temple to serve as its ornaments.

The third concept misunderstood is that of the common priesthood of the laity. In advancing this notion beyond its proper scope, some liturgists demand the abolition of any distinctions whatever between the sacred minister and the laity. Thus, any physical barriers between them are taboo. Communion rails are especially hated and any physical reminder of a "holy of holies" must go, so hordes of lay functionaries can swarm in and out of the "sanctuary."

In addition to the physical renovations themselves, the methods by which they are inflicted are of equal or even greater concern. The "process" leading up to the actual arrival of the bulldozers begins with the appearance of the ubiquitous "experts" and "professionals" who tell the people only what they are supposed to hear. Glossy, one-sided hand-outs are distributed at "listening sessions" while the people are assured that "no final decisions have been made." Usually, a renovation committee consisting of carefully selected parishioners emerges' to announce the final plans, while any alternative suggestions or proposals are stifled by whatever methods-gentle or not so gentle-that circumstances require. There are no credible estimates that we know of as to how much money has been wasted over the last thirty years on needless renovations of North American church buildings, but it must be in the hundreds of millions, or perhaps billions, of dollars.

To close this part of the discussion on a hopeful note, there is a rather remote but growing possibility that (if our prayers are answered) most of the renovations may eventually have to be undone. The first signs of a true "reform of the reform" may have appeared and are reported on page two of this issue. Should this come to pass, even more billions will be needed to set things right. But, we suspect, the people will not mind putting up the money.

Suppressing (Closing) Parishes

Just as we admitted that places of worship cannot remain unchanged forever, we must concede that not every parish has a right to perpetual existence. Acknowledging this general rule, though, does not mean that we have to agree with every suppression decreed by every chancery.

There is one very important difference between renovating church buildings and suppressing parishes. Buildings, of course, do not in themselves have rights and the renovation, or even destruction, of a parish church does not alter the legal status of the parish, which has what is called a juridic personality. In other words, a juridic person in canon law is roughly equivalent to a corporation in secular law. And like a corporation, a juridic person has rights and duties under the law. The primary and fundamental right of any person, natural or legal, is to existence. Father Coriden puts it this way:

"Once a stable community of faithful people has taken shape, it has the right to canonical recognition (e.g., first as a mission or quasi-parish, then as a parish; c. 516). Once established as a parish, the community possesses juridic personality and is, nature sue perpetual (cc. 515, #3; 120, #1). In other words, the parish should remain in existence until overwhelming reasons for its alteration or suppression are clearly demonstrated."

After hearing about or becoming directly involved in parish suppression cases throughout the country, we have yet to see a single example of "overwhelming" reasons. Indeed, virtually all suppressions--and absolutely all which are contested by the parishioners--are justified on the basis of a shortage of priests, more efficient use of facilities, even distribution of people, financial considerations or other factors which have little or nothing to do with the vitality of the community.

Sometimes the reasons given for suppression make no sense at all. For example, the city of Clinton, Iowa, in the Diocese of Davenport used to have five parishes. In 1990, all five were suppressed and one "mega parish" was created in their place. The bishop's letter announcing and attempting to support the action said this:

"And yet, I see that the needs of the past, e.g., for ethnic parishes, are not the needs of today. In fact, the need for unity and united action are the paramount needs of today. (*Almost the exact same thing was stated in this week's Star Herald -Julie)

In other words, five parishes competing for people, funds and personnel is not what the Catholic community needs."

In truth, none of the five parishes was "ethnic" and all were vibrant communities of faith. No one in Clinton has ever understood why their city could not have more than one parish when other cities in the diocese (Davenport, Iowa City, Muscatine, etc.) continue to have several. No one in the chancery has ever been able to explain why either.

Although renovations and suppressions are different kinds of actions, the "process" leading up to them is often remarkably similar. The ever-present "professionals" and "expert consultants" arrive to "soften-up" the parishioners with unctuous assurances that "no decisions will be made without everyone having their say." Then, as in the case of renovations, all those who have opinions contrary to the outcome desired by the chancery are marginalized or excluded from the discussions by whatever means necessary. We have even seen instances where elderly parishioners were threatened with denial of Christian burial if they continued to object.

Should the consultation process produce recommendations which the bishop does not like, such as recently happened in the diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he simply rides roughshod over the procedures he himself established and decrees whatever he wishes.

In short, the decisions to suppress are utterly lacking in reasonable motives and the "consultation processes" lack even a scintilla of justice. The ultimate injustice occurs when a parish suffers the "double whammy" of being forced to renovate its church and then, several years later, being suppressed.

In Conclusion

In spite of the discouraging trends, there are reasons for hope. One of these reasons is that many of the courageous faithful who try to save their churches from the renovators or their parishes from the axe simply refuse to give up. Even when they lose, as often happens, their efforts are not wasted. We know of cases where renovations were prevented and parishes slated for suppression were saved because the "professionals" did not want to face another struggle which might even involve an appeal to Rome.

And who knows? With enough prayer and hard work, we may even see in our lifetime a system of appeal which will see cases decided on the law and the facts instead of ecclesiastical politics and influence peddling.

Today at 11:30am mass we were privileged to have a visiting priest named Fr. Marty Smith, OSA. It seems that he may become a regular fixture at St. Mary's and unless I miss my guess, parishioners will not be disappointed. Fr. Smith kindly introduced himself as an Augustinian who currently resides at the Augustinian monastery at Villanova University. He has been ordained a priest for 32 years now. Our area, of course, is accustomed to the Augustinians due to the proximity of St. Augustine's Prep. For example, at my own grandfather's funeral, an Augustinian priest, to our great surprise, showed up to say the mass at Sacred Heart since he so fondly remembered my grandfather. I was so moved by that gesture, I won't ever forget it.

Anyway, Fr. Smith gave an excellent but simple sermon about weathering life's storms and how we should always ask ourselves whether or not we are asking for God's intercession or whether we are depending upon ourselves to make it through. Since it was Father's Day today, Fr. Smith offered a special prayer for the fathers at mass which granted a plenary indulgence! Apparently the privilege of offering this indulgence was granted to Augustinians many years ago when one of them did a "favor" for the pope. I was unfortunately unable to find any further information on this online, so I can't share with you anything other than that.

It is a frenetic time for United States Catholics.

The Diocese of New York is preparing to usher in a new cardinal, and the Diocese of Boston and others nationwide are trying to handle the ongoing fallout from the priest sexual abuse scandal.

Closer to home, the protracted battle between the Diocese of Camden and several of its parishes threatened with mergers or closures continues in an increasingly steadfast man-ner.

So far, the reconfiguration of Gloucester City-area churches appears to be rolling along steadily and smoothly.

If a movie, it might be called All Quiet on the Western Camden Front.

But, outside Gloucester City, it is more like Too Quiet on the Western Front.

The older CCD kids made "bunny bags" and prepared the eggs (both dying and stuffing them) for the younger kids. They also assisted the younger children on the Easter Egg Hunt itself. There were so many kids they had to replenish the eggs several times so all the kids could have a chance to find some.

Better think again. We were recently visiting the new website for "The Catholic Community of Christ Our Light" in Cherry Hill. As mentioned in our previous blog post, this is to be the name of the future merged parish of Queen of Heaven and St. Peter Celestine.

Anyway, the interesting thing is that the website has the same job openings as listed in the Courier Post help wanted ad, plus another one:  Coordinator for Sound, Video, and Lighting.

From the position description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLILITES (includes but not limited to all of the following)

· Maintain all applicable electronic equipment for the parish including, but not limited to: lights, video production tools, televisions, projectors, monitors, and microphones.

·Prepare all equipment to be accessible and operable for all parish functions.


·Recruit, schedule, train and supervise volunteers.

· Report to Pastoral Associate for Worship and Music to prepare for upcoming liturgy and services

·Maintain an inventory of equipment and a library of productions.

Wow! Nothing says vibrant like video production and lights!  Maybe they can get Joel Osteen to swing by and deliver the homilies on Sunday. Maybe some show tunes and liturgical dancing can be added.  Maybe Fr. Tom Newton could play in an African Drum Band.  Maybe they could add "ritual," which always makes people feel good.  You know something like holding hands in a circle and singing kumbaya.

 

I am not even sure what to say anymore, except that we are clearly being turned into protestant mega-churches and anyone who doesn't believe this is being naive.  Anyone who accepts this is compromising their faith.  Remember, at your Confirmation, you became a Soldier of Christ.  Well, the battle is here!

St. Mary's News

As most of you are aware, we now have a new pastor, Fr. Edward Namiotka.  Fr. Romanowski has appealed his removal as pastor of St. Mary's*, but while the appeal is pending, Fr. Namiotka will be pastor.  Fr. Romanowski has chosen retirement over reassignment as a parochial vicar at St. Nicholas in Atlantic City.  If he wins his appeal, Fr. Romanowski will be reinstated as pastor of St. Mary's.  In the meantime, he will continue to reside at the rectory at least through the end of April and will assist Fr. Namiotka with the pastoral care of our parish.  We welcome Fr. Namiotka and continue to support Fr. Romanowski. 

Many people are wondering what this transition means for our efforts to save St. Mary's.  For the most part, we will continue on exactly as we have been.  Fr. Namiotka's appointment does not mean our church will close anytime soon, nor does it mean that our church will stay open for the duration of his six year term.  This will be explained in more detail at the Save St. Mary's Meeting on Monday, March 9th at 6:30 pm.

What You Can Do To Help

1.        PRAY!  Say a quick Hail Mary, a whole rosary or a decade, offer a mass, visit St. Mary's, offer time before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, whatever you can do.

2.        STAY ACTIVE!  Try joining a parish group, participating in a devotion, become a lector, etc.  Our parish is active every day of the week, stop by anytime and encourage others to come to St. Mary's. 

3.        CONTRIBUTE!  It's important that St. Mary's be self-sufficient.  Please contribute generously to your church (the first collection) and also to Save St. Mary's.  

4.        WORK WITH ONE OF THE SAVE ST. MARY'S COMMITTEES!  We have several committees working to keep St. Mary's open.  Please join one of the following committees to help with the planning:  Prayer/Devotionals, Picketing/Rallies, Media, Letter Writing, Fundraising, Vigil Prep, Canon Law Appeal, Civil Litigation.

What true shepherd of God would "trouble his own house?" Scripture tells us that "where there is no governor, the people shall fall."

What will happen to the faithful when their churches are threatened, their faith rocked, and controversy and corruption rule the day? Our Lord paints a disturbing picture. Wickedness leads only to spiritual death. It is in Justice, who is the Lord God alone, that we may place our hope, and consequently we are called to live uprightly.

Proverbs 11 in its entirety is a scripture that speaks to our time and circumstance. Truly we must follow God for His own sake and not our own, because He is God the Truth and deserves our total commitment. Through His Word, the Lord teaches us again and again that righteousness is to be pursued for its own sake, because it is His way, not because we can expect righteousness as an end result or because we hope for some special favors in this life. It's as simple as this: Good may never be obtained by doing wrong. That is God's law.

Either make the tree good and its fruit good: or make the tree evil, and its fruit evil. For by the fruit the tree is known. O generation of vipers, how can you speak good things, whereas you are evil? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of a good treasure bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of an evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. Matthew 12:33-35

We rise by God's grace and fall by our own doing. We elect not to follow Christ--there are no accidents in this life. We should not be deceived by "the mouth of the wicked;" we must choose to seek out the truth and follow it. Therefore we beg the mercy of the Father and pray never to succumb to wickedness. "The dissembler with his mouth deceiveth his friend: but the just shall be delivered by knowledge." Wickedness comes from only one place, one being, and that being is not God. Be delivered by the uncomplicated Truth.

May God help us in this time of trial! God bless all of you, and please continue to pray daily for the bishop and all those working with him. Offer up a little prayer or sacrifice for his conversion and for the many countless souls who will likely perish as a result of this unholy de-evangelization. Even without church closures, the "last nails in the coffin" have been hammered for many who have already left the Faith or would never again entertain the thought of returning. Many of us have, unfortunately, witnessed this in our interactions with disgusted friends, family, and neighbors. Sadly, even good, practicing Catholics have begun to have doubts of all kinds. The faith of so many have been shaken by this crisis. But let's not forget that what's at stake is the dethroning of Christ. Christ must be seated on the throne of our hearts. He must be enthroned within our Diocese also, or else it is a house built on sand.

At length he appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again. And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned. Mark 16:14-16

Clarifying a Misleading Diocesan Administrator on Prayer

When Marilyn Vollmer tried to explain prayer to the multitudes, she said we often don't receive what we pray for. I thought and prayed about that point when I was in first grade. I later found out that we often get something better than what we pray for.* In fact, true prayer--which Marilyn Vollmer ought to study because her immortal soul depends on it--always has a primary goal to give honor and glory to God.

Our Lord teaches us that fact in the Our Father. The fact that the first words and the Name of that prayer are stressing the relationship we have with God. Any other reason for praying is secondary, far down on the list of genuine prayer. "Lifting of the mind and heart to God" says everything. No conveners or facilitators need apply.

Prayer and Our Blessed Mother

In our battle against the devil Catholics make the consecration to Our Lord through the Immaculate Heart of Mary and that is true prayer. Our Blessed Mother's prayer, which is subordinate to the Our Father but flows from it, gives all honor and glory to God. "My soul doth magnify the Lord" (St. Luke 1:46). The actions of our Blessed Mother and St. Elizabeth portray the perfection of prayer.

First, there is the salutation of our Blessed Mother that leads to the sanctification of her child, St. John, in her womb. This encounter is the model for all who hold human life sacred. When prayer is performed properly, great and majestic events take place.

Our Blessed Mother greets us in every prayer because she is always united to Our Lord and brings Our Lord to us. St. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost (St. Luke 1:41). This is what happens to us in our devotion to our Blessed Mother. Unbelievers don't allow these words to penetrate the heart. Believers never doubt nor fear the encounter with Jesus through the intercession of His Mother.

Proper Lenten Prayer and Practices

That is why our prayers enable us to prepare for Lent properly as in the Latin Ordo (calendar of the saints). We dismiss the apostates'** practices of stones in the holy water font, having the Resurrected Lord in place of the Crucified Lord, failure to practice bodily mortification (we practice penance), substituting yoga instead of the Stations of the Cross, and ignoring the law of abstinence on Fridays. The apostates in the Church like to tell us how they enjoyed their vacations. There aren't any vacations in Hell.***

Holy Examples are No Accident: They are God's Grace!

Sr.Mary Celine of the Felician Sisters of Lodi taught us the above in the seventh grade. We knew of that material on prayer before that, but Sr. Mary Celine stood out by living that prayer in a cheerful way. It was a grace for me to find out that Sr. Mary Celine often visited a family at St. Mary's, Malaga long before I came here. Those graces never stop coming to our Shrine Parish!

* From the Editor: God answers all prayers of his children! But the problem of the current diocesan administration is something we've long known at Savestmarys: they have no hope.
 
Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the Kingdom of Heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit. "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.... We can therefore hope in the glory of heaven promised by God to those who love him and do his will. In every circumstance, each one of us should hope, with the grace of God, to persevere 'to the end' and to obtain the joy of heaven, as God's eternal reward for the good works accomplished with the grace of Christ. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1817-1821)

  • Interestingly, see James 4:1-5, the section summarized as, "The evils that flow from yielding to concupiscence and being friends to this world." Perhaps this is why Ms. Volmer does not receive that for which she purports to pray.

    From whence are wars and contentions among you? Are they not hence, from your concupiscences, which war in your members? You covet, and have not: you kill, and envy, and can not obtain. You contend and war, and you have not, because you ask not. You ask, and receive not; because you ask amiss: that you may consume it on your concupiscences. Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world, becometh an enemy of God. Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you.

  • Again, if we keep his commandments. See 1John 3:21-22: Dearly beloved, if our heart do not reprehend us, we have confidence towards God: And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.

  • Matthew 7: 6-10: Give not that which is holy to dogs; neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turning upon you, they tear you. Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. For every one that asketh, receiveth: and he that seeketh, findeth: and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. Or what man is there among you, of whom if his son shall ask bread, will he reach him a stone? Or if he shall ask him a fish, will he reach him a serpent?
  • Luke 11: 9-13: And I say to you, Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. For anyone who doesn't receive the transition newsletter series, this latest one (#18, from 01-09-2009) is pretty funny, so I wanted to share it with you.  Like the rest, its entertainment value far outweighs its "news" content.  But at least you get to see how your charitable contributions are being spent at the diocesan level.

 

The newsletter starts with what can only be described as a large bowl of word salad from Marilyn Vollmer:

 

"Belated and prayer wishes for the New Year!  My fingers find it difficult to type 2009 as this number marks the 3rd year of planning preparations leading toward the goal of renewed and dynamic parish life in South Jersey."               

I'm not sure if this greeting is an attempt at New-Aginess or just a sign of intellectual decline.  I'm also not sure if her fingers are disappointed that the program has taken so long or if they are just in shock that this farce has been allowed to continue for three years now. 

 

Anyway, the word salad greeting is followed up with some platitudes, then this interesting analogy:

 

"At a deeper level this is a profoundly spiritual journey of the Paschal mystery, the same mystery we celebrate every Lent that climaxes with the Easter Triduum: life, death, and resurrection so that others may have life."

Ooh, I like metaphors.  Let me try this one out.  Our parishes are like Jesus, their destruction is like His crucifixion, and the new parishes are like His resurrection.  Not at all sure I agree with the last part of that, but I'll play along and extend the metaphor a bit further.  I guess that means that the Bishop would be like...Judas.  Those who know this is wrong, but refuse to say or do anything about it for fear of losing their position would be like...Pontius Pilate.  And the people from stand-alone parishes and primary worship sites who support this reconfiguration because it validates the "holiness" of their own parish would be like...the Jews crying out "Crucify Him!"  You make a good point Marilyn - thanks for the insight! 

 

Next comes the rolling out of a "leadership" training program by Peg Garvey-Mitchell for all core team members and conveners.  I can't think of a better way to waste large amounts of money than this.  Even the empty "convent" in Pittsgrove may eventually increase in value, but this is just silly.  If leadership can be taught at all, it would certainly take a lot more than a few hours with a consultant whose qualifications seem questionable.  Peg Garvey-Mitchell's profile on the National Pastoral Life Center website is strikingly devoid of any real credentials:

 

"Ms. Peg Garvey-Mitchell - Planning Consultant for non-profits

"Peg comes to us from with a vast experience of planning experiences which include leadership development, communication skills and group process. She recently served as a facilitator for the Diocese of Metuchen's First Synod. She is a consultant to the NPLC and facilitated the 2007 and 2008 Bernardin Conferences for the Catholic Common Ground Initiative."

No degrees or training are mentioned and no specific experience referenced prior to 2007 - just the generic claim of "a vast experience of planning experiences."  Surely, in such a short bio, there would have been room to mention at least one of the vast experiences.  I just don't get it - first Follieri, now Peg Garvey-Mitchell - who is making these decisions and where is the accountability? 

 

But my favorite line of the whole newsletter is this:

 

"It goes without saying that attending the Training Sessions is a must for the Priest Conveners."

Well, I guess it also goes without saying that if it really went without saying, Marilyn would not be saying it, much less underlining the word "must."  Yes, you conveners, you must go see Peg Garvey-Mitchell.  Without the benefit of her "vast experience of planning experiences," how will you ever learn how to communicate or lead?    

 

The newsletter ends with a note that Marilyn will be addressing questions about worship sites soon.  We've heard that the diocese is going to stop using the term "secondary" for worship sites to try to stem opposition from those parishes designated "secondary worship sites."  That's not confirmed yet, though, so we'll just have to wait and see.

 

My fingers find it difficult to type 309 as this number marks the 309th blog entry since the planning preparation decisions leading to the destruction of nearly half the parishes in South Jersey were announced.   Delayed and charm thoughts for the New Year to you too, Marilyn.

Another Glorious Sign of God's Mercy

The Baptism of Our Lord is celebrated in conjunction with the Feast of the Epiphany. In the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church we always give due honor to both feasts. The sacramental nature of Our Lord's Church is stressed by Our Lord's institution of the Sacrament of Baptism. We must do everything we can to teach the true power of the sacraments in our lives.

Preparation is necessary to see the ongoing work of the sacraments. That is why we teach the permanent character imprinted on the soul by the three sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. This means that these sacraments operate in the soul constantly.

The Holy Spirit is the True Guest of our souls from the moment that water is poured on the head of the child or adult when he chooses to be baptized. How wonderful it is to recognize the gifts that God bestows on us. Recognize the total forgiveness that God gives to a newly baptized soul--total forgiveness, mercy with no punishment due to sin.

I emphasize the point that when we have faith in God's mercy in the soul of one individual, we recognize that same perfection is appealing to everyone. We see that in our daily lives how we can withstand the assaults of the devil which we always know from the depth of our being that is because of God's grace that we protect and nourish through the all powerful intercession of the Blessed Mother of God.

St.Mary's Shrine Parish has been called and chosen by God to bring His mercy continuously into the world and we have the true Sign of the Blessed Mother's words given to us, imprinted on our souls because of our vocation:

Gloucester County Times Article

This past Sunday the Gloucester County Times published a piece on the Diocesan mergers.  Our favorite spokesperson, Andy Walton, was interviewed. 

"The priest conveners and core teams will begin meeting monthly in January to begin work directly involved in preparing the parishes. The bishop has announced his intentions, but there won't be mergers until the core teams and conveners tell the bishop of the parishes' readiness and he issues a decree formally establishing that new parish."

We don't place much confidence in what the diocese says, but for what it's worth, make sure your core team members know how you feel about the merger, because they (theoretically at least) will be the ones who decide when to pull the plug.

Walton said that some parishes will be able to come together more quickly, especially those who wish to expedite the process and have been working together since the announcement last spring.

You know, I am all about merging those parishes that wish to be merged and closing those churches that wish to be closed.  I am skeptical that there are many in this category, but for those that are, by all means, knock yourselves out.  But don't merge those parishes that do not wish to be merged!  After a few years, if the mergers of the parishes that want to be merged are in fact successful, there would surely not be so much resistance to other mergers.  But so far, that hasn't happened. 

I've talked to people from the three previous mergers in the Diocese of Camden (St. Michael and Our Lady of Victories in Minotola/Landisville, St. Mary's and Our Lady of Pompeii in Vineland, and Sacred Heart and St. Lucy in Cedarbrook/Blue Anchor) and all have said that the mergers were horrible and are rough even now, years later.  One used the expression that "there was blood in the streets."  And these were mergers under ideal circumstances - where the both churches were staying open ("primary worship sites") and the communities were already close and had much in common.

Imagine how much worse it would be for new proposed mergers, where churches are closing and the parishes sometimes have little in common.  For instance, the St. Mary's (Malaga), St. Rose (Newfield), Queen of the Angels (Minotola and Landisville) and Our Lady of the Lakes (Collings Lakes) merger spans parts of at least four (Gloucester, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland), and I believe five counties (also Camden), and around a dozen or so municipalities.  Children from this proposed parish would attend high schools from Woodstown to Hammonton, and Vineland to Williamstown (plus Buena, Delsea, Schalick, and others).  In fact, according to Google maps, the travel time from one end of the proposed new parish to the other is around 30 minutes.  It's clear that nobody thought this out intelligently.  And this is just one of many, many examples of failures of the program/process. 

Also, as a note, even though all six churches of the mergers from a few years ago stayed open, at least two will now be closing in this round of mergers.  So don't feel secure in your primary or secondary worship site status.  It can and will change in the next round of mergers, which has already been alluded to by Fr. Gregorio in an August letter to the editor of the Cape May County Herald:

Again if you were the bishop, and you knew that the average diocesan priest today is 64, and that only 12 men are in all stages of seminary theological training, and that many times that will retire or die by 2015, what would you do? What will the average age be in 2015? By then, the bishop will be forced to do another, even more painful consolidation. Fair-minded people are saying this bishop had the courage to do what two or three previous bishops should have done since they had the same demographics.

No, Fr. Gregorio, fair-minded people are saying maybe the three previous Bishops were right and it is Galante who is mistaken.  I never appreciated DiMarzio so much as I do now.

A "Fatal Error"

I recently stumbled upon this quote from Pope John Paul II, referenced in a document from the Congregation for the Clergy called "The Priest - Pastor and Leader of the Parish Community."  In the context of explaining various accomodations that can be made in the face of a priest shortage, John Paul II said the following in an address to the Plenary meeting of the Congregation for the Clergy on November 23, 2001 (p.216):

"It would be a fatal error to despair in the face of present difficulties and adopt an attitude which, de facto, would prepare a Church of the future which would be almost bereft of priests. Measures adopted in this light to counter present shortages of priests, not withstanding the good intentions motivating them, would, in fact, be seriously prejudicial for the ecclesial community".



Last weekend, on November 15th, Leah and Julie (me) attended an information session for the shiny, new lay ministry program that Bishop Galante (etc.) is initiating. It was held at Elizabeth Ann Seton parish in Absecon, which happens to be the parish in which I was raised and received the sacraments. The introductory session, led by Roseann Quinn (yet another undercover "sister" who works for the diocese) was rather dry. I was expecting more information on the broader vision for the lay ministry program; you know, how they intend to implement it in the long run. But almost nothing was said about this. (Other than that the requisite, "we want more vibrant and dynamic parishes.") Instead they focused on the various degree and certificate programs affiliated with the College of St. Elizabeth and Georgian Court.

But no information was given about the programs before discussing money. What we did get, to my surprise, was a commercial advertisement. Literally. Roseann broke down the cost of the courses/program various times, each time emphasizing how cheap it is. I believe she even used the word, "cheap." I felt like I was witnessing one of those infomercials you see on tv late at night. It was a bargain basement sale. Roseann Quinn literally said that the tuition costs were "83% off." But wait! There's more! They even pushed up the application deadline from the one printed in the booklet, you know, in the spirit of "Don't delay, act NOW! This is a limited time offer!" The application date is now December 15th for the diocese (and as I recall December 5th for the graduate program at Georgian Court). Frankly, I was disgusted with the manner of the presentation. These people weren't attending because they were interested in purchasing Ginsu Knives.

While I appreciate the fact that the schools and diocese are going to such great lengths to make these programs affordable, on the other hand I personally would have emphasized the quality of the program and degrees the students would be receiving, the excellent professors and curricula, and the overall vision, with the ultimate affordability making said program a realistic option for those interested. When you initiate an educational program, the number one thing to put out there, to my mind, would not be, "Do this! It's cheap!" Again, I quote,

"If you feel the energy of the spirit working in you, keep up that energy. Don't delay. You'll never get a better bargain."

Two Thoughts

I came away from the information session with two distinct thoughts.

1. I don't think that the Diocese of Camden was being honest in its presentation of the program(s) and their overall intentions of, essentially, replacing priests with "lay ministers." Since I already have a Masters in Religion, the importance of study and knowing one's faith (as well as others) is not something that's lost on me. I do think it's important for all Catholics to better know and understand the Faith. It was interesting and quite telling, though, that Roseann claimed that six points "percolated up from the Speak Up Sessions" that "we as Church developed." The "diocese heard loud and clear that we as laity need to be empowered and educated." Well, what they "heard" is neither here nor there, since they hear what they want to hear. (I'm sure they also heard, "Close my church! Please!") Anyway, she listed these six percolations as:

    1. Liturgy
    2. Lay ministry
    3. Youth/young adult ministry
    4. Priestly vocations
    5. Lifelong formation
    6. Compassionate outreach

She then went on to say that senior ministry was just added, since "it wasn't anywhere except for housing." (Housing. Ha ha, she said it, I didn't...) She also said that consultants were brought in for families, youth, and RE (lifelong faith formation). In other words, Roseann went over every point...except priestly vocations. What, pray tell Roseann, is the diocese planning to do to ENCOURAGE (not DIScourage) priestly vocations??? Is there no fancy, high-paid consultant you can hire to solve that problem? (Or maybe they already have, and the consultant advised them to send priests away, because with every priest you get rid of you get three new ones somehow?) I myself find it remarkable that the laity's outcry for priestly vocations even got onto the actual list, considering the bishop's and his cronies' poor listening skills.

In any case, if you plan on applying for one of these certificate or degree programs, be prepared to be "empowered." Peace, man, power to the people! Be free. Liberate yourselves, dudes. Be assured that this program will "allow more pastoral time for priests." Yeah, a whooollllle lot more pastoral time. It's called retirement.

2. On the face of it, though, the Georgian Court program appears acceptable. I must say that I was impressed with the woman who came from Georgian Court who, after we went to smaller groups, discussed the graduate program. She was very nice and entertained all manner of questions in a professional manner. I have no idea the quality or content or "Catholicity" of the Georgian Court theology program, although I did have a younger relative graduate from that school recently in a different field. I believe she liked the school overall despite some difficulties here and there. However her degree is not in theology.

What's more in question, I think, is what the Diocese of Camden plans on doing with recipients of the degrees and what it does not do to increase religious or priestly vocations.  What we have to fear is how our current bishop and his "administration" plan on changing the Church as we know it.

Remarks Interesting Or Disturbing

First, the more or less disturbing things.

"Prayer"
The day started out with "prayer," although it was no prayer that I would recognize as Catholic. As it turned out, it was not Catholic at all. Roseann had obtained a "prayer" written by well known Biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann, ordained pastor in the liberal United Church of Christ. She made a point of saying what a fan she is of Dr. Brueggemann. Of course there was no Sign of the Cross, and naturally no other "formula" prayers you and I would be familiar with. There was certainly no talk of the saints, angels, or the Blessed Mother of God. Here it is:

An Answering and Refusing

We confess you to be a God who calls,
                                           who wills,
                                           who summons,
                                           who has concrete intentions for your creation,
                                           and addresses human agents who do your will.
We imagine ourselves called by you...
        Yet a strange lot:
                 called but cowardly,
                 obedient but self-indulgent,
                 devoted to you, but otherwise preoccupied.
In our strange mix an answering and refusing,
          We give thanks for your call.
          We pray this day,
                for ourselves, fresh vision;

                         in places more dangerous than ours,

As we seek to answer your call, may we be haunted by your large purposes,
We pray in the name of the utterly called Jesus. Amen.

Well, I could comment quite a bit on this prayer, my fellow "human agents," but my "fresh vision" and limited space disallows me. Just one thing though: Although I call the Third Person of the Holy Trinity the "Holy Ghost," I never imagined that He "haunted" me. Kind of bizarre. There were also a few moments of ummm...what did she call it...centering prayer? As a closing "prayer," they read the mission statement for the Diocese of Camden. Needless to say I skipped out on that and went to visit Our Lord in the church for a few minutes. I came back toward the end of the mission statement prayer recitation.

That Ol' Time Religion Ain't Our Religion?
Roseann also said that if the last religious education was that which you experienced in the 1950s, you need an update. The implication was decidedly that if your initial religious education and formation as a young Catholic occurred prior to Vatican II, you need a faith update. I personally found this shocking, because the Faith is eternal and, of course, does not change.

And finally, a couple of things I found interesting.

1. The person sitting next to us saw my St. Mary's Malaga shirt under my jacket and asked us how the efforts were going. She seemed depressed about what she saw as the immanent closure of her church, which is currently categorized as a "secondary worship site." Apparently no one at her church believes the nonsense about "worship sites" and is of the mind that their beautiful, historical church will ultimately be closed.

2. Several in the group asked Roseann questions related to the merger situation. One asked about their current pastor letter of recommendation would suffice; one asked whether, once they got the degree, they would be ministering at their current church if it was slated for merger; and one asked if they would actually be put to use in the newly constructed diocese if they went through all the effort of obtaining a degree. In response, Roseann answered, "Priest conveners have no authority until the new parish is actually established, and that will be a ways off." She also said, "If you are recommended by your pastor then you would work in your current ministry....but there is no guarantee."

3. The Diocese of Camden has apparently hired a man named Travis Lawmaster who is originally from the Archdiocese of Newark, which as many of us know is in just fabulous shape. (?!?!) He was at the information session. Travis was hired to do youth and young adult ministry so that we may have "vibrant, faith filled communities," "a seamless garment of formation," and "relational ministry." Though he's probably a nice enough guy, I have no idea what he was talking about, but wish him the best of luck with his garment and relational vibrancy and whatnot.
